PREFACE.

THESE exercises presuppose a very elementary though practical knowledge of the parts of speech; that is to say, pupils about to use them should be able to call by name, at sight, noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, in any easy English sentence. For the sake of clearness and simplicity the instruction preceding each exercise has been put in very brief outline, leaving to be made orally any further explanation that may be needed. The one aim has been to provide for beginners a direct, simple, and abundant application of the definitions of the parts of speech; for, the nature of these once clearly and familiarly perceived, ready grasp of the relations of sentence-structure naturally follows. The order of the exercises should generally be observed as given here, with the exception of that on the Subject Absolute, which it would probably be best always to defer until after the development gained by considerable practice in analysis. “A set of orders for guidance in parsing is added by way of convenience of reference, although in preparing lessons for recitation this would be found much more serviceable when used in its detached form.

The selection of the language of standard authors alone, including a few proverbs and well-known anonymous quotations, has throughout been rigidly adhered to. Possibly it is of still greater importance that all the examples chosen are veritable sentences ; that is, all are complete in their construction, though many have been abridged from their original form, the order and juxtaposition of words remaining,
