6 Oh, may thy counsels, Mighty God! My roving feet command;

Nor I forsake the happy road

That leads to thy right hand.

171.

THE LAMP.
Evan-Solomon-Canterbury.

C. M.

1 Lamp of our feet, whereby we trace Our path when wont to stray; Stream from the fount of heavenly grace, Brook by the traveller's way:

2 Bread of our souls, whereon we feed,
True manna from on high;

Our guide and chart, wherein we read
Of realms beyond the sky:

3 Pillar of fire, through watches dark,
And radiant cloud by day;

When waves would whelm our tossing bark,

Our anchor and our stay:

4 Word of the everlasting God, Will of his glorious Son;

Without thee how could earth be trod, Or heaven itself be won!

5 Lord, grant us all aright to learn
The wisdom it imparts;

And to its heavenly teaching turn,
With simple, childlike hearts.

172. A LIGHT IN A Dark Place.

Ballerma-Gloucester-Bishopthorpe.

1 How precious is the book divine,
By inspiration given!

Bright as a lamp its doctrines shine,
To guide our souls to heaven.

2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts
In this dark vale of tears;
Life, light, and joy it still imparts,
And quells our rising fears.

C. M.

3 This lamp, through all the tedious night
Of life, shall guide our way;
Till we behold the clearer light
Of an eternal day.

Knox-Spanish Chant-Moravia?

1 Holy Bible, book Divine;
Precious treasure, thou art mine;
Mine, to tell me whence I came;
Mine, to teach me what I am.
2 Mine, to chide me when I rove;
Mine, to show a Saviour's love;
Mine art thou to guide my feet;
Mine, to judge, condemn, acquit.

78.

3 Mine, to comfort in distress, If the Holy Spirit bless; Mine, to show by living faith Man can triumph over death. 4 Mine, to tell of joys to come, And the rebel sinner's doom; Holy Bible, book Divine,

Precious treasure, thou art mine.

FOOD AND MEDICINE, SHIELD
AND SWORD.

Holstein Eucharist -Edgeware.

1 Precious Bible! what a treasure Does the word of God afford! All I want for life or pleasure,

8.7.8.7.

7.7.

Food and Medicine, Shield and Sword;
Let the world account me poor,
Having this I need no more.

2 Food to which the world's a stranger,
Here my hungry soul enjoys;
Of excess there is no danger,
Though it fills it never cloys;
On a dying Christ I feed,

He is meat and drink indeed!

3 When my faith is faint and sickly,
Or when Satan wounds my mind,
Cordials to revive me quickly,
Healing med'cines here I find:

To the promises I flee,

Each affords a remedy.

4 In the hour of dark temptation
Satan cannot make me yield;
For the word of consolation
Is to me a mighty shield:

While the Scripture truths are sure,
From his malice I'm secure.

5 Vain his threats to overcome me,
When I take the Spirit's sword;
Then with ease I drive him from me,
Satan trembles at the word:

'Tis a sword for conquest made, Keen the edge and strong the blade. 6 Shall I envy then the miser, Doting on his golden store? Sure I am or should be wiser, I am rich, 'tis he is poor;

Jesus gives me in his Word,

Food and med'cine, shield and sword.

EVER FRUITFUL, EVER FLOURISHING. C. M.
Bloxham-Burton-Harborough.

1 The sacred Word, so fraught with use, Is bright with beauty too,

Oft startling us like blooms profuse
Upon a sudden view.

2 But more amazing than the bloom
Which all the tree bestuds,
See, peering from the leafy gloom,
A hundred thousand buds.

3 Oh, bud for ever, glorious tree,
Oh, ever blossom thus;

So shall thy good fruits plenteously
Hang ripening for us.

176. GOD'S WORKS AND GOD'S WORD.

Bedford-Tottenham-Ashley.

C. M.

1 The heavens are telling high and wide
The glory of the Lord,

The firmament and deeps of air
His handiwork record.

2 Day speaks to day-a gushing fount
Of praise that cannot fail:
Day unto day, and night to night,
Tells out the wondrous tale.

3 No sound, no converse; all unheard
The solemn voice they send;

Their line goes out o'er all the earth,
Their words to the world's end.

4 In them the Lord made for the sun
A tent and home on high,

Who like a bridegroom quits his bower To tread the morning sky;
