6 So shall his presence bless our souls,
And shed a joyful light;

That hallow'd morn shall chase away
The sorrows of the night.

230.

WAIT ON THE LORD.

8.7.

Alma-Hibernia-Mariner's.

1 Mountains by the darkness hidden
Are as real as in the day;
Be, then, unbelief forbidden
In a dreary hour to say,

"God hath left us, God hath left us;
Oh, why hath he gone away?"

2 When he folds the cloud about him,
Firm within it stands his throne;
Wherefore should his children doubt him,
Those to whom his love is known?
God is with us, God is with us;
We are never left alone.

3 Travellers at night, by fleeing,
Cannot run into the day:
God can lead the blind and seeing;
On him wait, and for him stay:
Be not fearful, be not fearful;
They who cannot sing can pray.

6 Like thee in faith, in meekness, love,
In every beauteous grace;

From glory thus to glory changed
As we behold thy face.

THE GREAT TRANSACTION.
Doversdale-Webbe's Third-Magdalen.

L. M.

1 O happy day, that fixed my choice On thee, my Saviour and my God! Well may this glowing heart rejoice, And tell its raptures all abroad. 2 O happy bond, that seals my vows, To him who merits all my love! Let cheerful anthems fill his house, While to that sacred shrine I move. 3 'Tis done: the great transaction's done; I am my Lord's, and he is mine. He drew me, and I followed on, Glad to confess the voice divine. 4 Now rest, my long-divided heart; Fixed on this blissful centre, rest. With ashes who would grudge to part, When called on angels' bread to feast? 5 High heaven, that heard the solemn vow, That vow renewed shall daily hear: Till in life's latest hour I bow,

And bless in death a bond so dear.

2 Hast thou not known, hast thou not
heard,

That firm remains on high
The everlasting throne of him
Who form'd the earth and sky?

3 Art thou afraid his pow'r shall fail
When comes thy evil day?
And can an all-creating arm
Grow weary or decay?

4 Supreme in wisdom as in power
The Rock of ages stands;

Though him thou canst not see, nor trace
The working of his hands.

5 He gives the conquest to the weak,
Supports the fainting heart;
And courage in the evil hour
His heav'nly aids impart.

6 Mere human power shall fast decay,
And youthful vigour cease;
But they who wait upon the Lord,
In strength shall still increase.

7 They with unwearied feet shall tread
The path of life divine;

With growing ardour onward move,
With growing brightness shine.

And leave my native land,

Where sin lulls all to sleep:
For thee I fain would all resign,

And sail to heaven with thee and thine.
2 What though the seas are broad?
What though the waves are strong?
What though tempestuous winds
Distress me all along?

Yet what are seas, or stormy wind,
Compared to Christ, the sinner's friend?

3 Thou art my pilot wise,

My compass is thy Word;
My soul each storm defies,

While I have such a Lord:
I trust thy faithfulness and power,
To save me in the trying hour.
4 Whene'er becalmed I lie,

And all my storms subside,
Then to my succour fly,

And keep me near thy side;

Far more the treach'rous calm I dread,
Than tempests bursting o'er my head.
5 Come, heavenly wind, and blow
A prosp'rous gale of grace,
And waft me from below,

To heaven, my destined place;
Then in full sail my port I'll find,
And leave the world and sin behind!

TEMPTATION.

Solday-St. Ambrose_Burleigh.

L.M.

1 The billows swell, the winds are high,
Clouds overcast my wintry sky;
Out of the depths to thee I call,
My fears are great, my strength is small.

2 O Lord, the pilot's part perform,
And guide and guard me through the
storm;

Defend me from each threatening ill,
Control the waves,-say, "Peace, be

still!"

3 Amidst the roaring of the sea,
My soul still hangs her hopes on thee;
Thy constant love, thy faithful care,
Is all that saves me from despair.

4 Dangers of every shape and name
Attend the followers of the Lamb,
Who leave the world's deceitful shore,
And leave it to return no more.

5 Though tempest-tossed, and half a wreck, My Saviour through the floods I seek; Let neither winds nor stormy main Force back my shattered bark again.
