4 Thine upper and thy nether springs,
Make men and angels thrive,
Under thy warm and sheltering wings
Thou keep'st both worlds alive.
5 And mercy, shining attribute,
The sinner's hope and plea!
Huge hosts of sins in their pursuit
Are drowned in its Red Sea.

6 Thy brilliant footprints, God of grace,
We humbly here adore;

7.

Show us thy glory and thy face,
That we may praise thee more.

MIGHT AND MAJESTY.

St. Nicholas-St. Magnus-Loughton.

1 How should the sons of Adam's race Be pure before their God?

If he contends in righteousness,

We sink beneath his rod.

C. M.

2 If he should mark my words and thoughts With strict inquiring eyes,

Could I for one of thousand faults

The least excuse devise?

3 Strong is his arm, his heart is wise;
Who dares with him contend?

Or who that tries the unequal strife,
Shall prosper in the end?

4 He makes the mountains feel his wrath, And their old seats forsake;

The trembling earth deserts her place,
And all her pillars shake

5 He bids the sun forbear to rise,
The obedient sun forbears;

His hand with sackcloth spreads the skies,
And seals up all the stars.

6 He walks upon the raging sea;
Flies on the stormy wind:

8.

None can explore his wondrous way,
Or his dark footsteps find.

HOLINESS.

St. Ann's-Mravia-Canterbury.

10 God, we praise thee, and confess
That thou, the only Lord
And everlasting Father, art
By all the earth adored.

2 To thee all angels cry aloud;
To thee the powers on high,
Both cherubim and seraphim,
Continually do cry—

30 holy, holy, holy Lord,

Whom heavenly hosts obey,
The world is with the glory filled
Of thy majestic sway.

C. M.

4 The apostles' glorious company,

And prophets crowned with light,
With all the martyrs' noble host,
Thy constant praise recite.

5 The holy Church throughout the world.
O Lord, confesses thee,
That thou, the eternal Father, art
Of boundless majesty.

GOODNESS.

Mariner's-Unity-Sidon?

1 God is love! his mercy brightens
All the path in which we rove;
Bliss he wakes, and woe he lightens :
God is goodness! "God is love!"
2 Chance and change are busy ever;
Man decays, and ages move;
But his mercy waneth never:

8.7.

God is goodness! "God is love!"
3 Even the hour that darkest seemeth
Will his changeless bounty prove:
From the mist his brightness streameth:
God is goodness! "God is love!"

4 He with earthly cares entwineth
Hope and comfort from above;
Everywhere his glory shineth:
God is goodness! "God is love!"

[blocks in formation]

Pascal-Day Star-Milgrove.

1 Earth, with her ten thousand flowers;
Air, with all its beams and showers;
Ocean's infinite expanse,

Heaven's resplendent countenance :-
All around, and all above,

Bear the record "God is love."

2 Sounds, among the vales and hills;
In the woods, and by the rills;
Of the breeze, and of the bird,
By the gentle summer stirr'd:-
All these sounds, beneath, above,
Have one burden-" God is love."
3 All the hopes and fears that start
From the fountain of the heart:
All the quiet bliss that lies

In our human sympathies:
These are voices from above,
Sweetly whispering-"God is love."

4 But, the great Redeemer's birth;
All he did and said on earth;
All his agonies and woes;

All the gifts his hand bestows;
All his pleadings now above:-
Loudest publish "God is love."

BOUNDLESS BENEFICENCE.

Grosvenor-Adoration-Whitefield.

8.8.6.

1 My God! thy boundless love I praise:
How bright on high its glories blaze!
How sweetly bloom below!

It streams from thy eternal throne;
Through heaven its joys for ever run,
And o'er the earth they flow.

2 It robes in cheerful green the ground,
And pours its flowery beauties round,
Whose sweets perfume the gale:
Its bounties richly spread the plain,
The blushing fruit, the golden grain,
And smile on every vale.

3 But in thy gospel see it shine

With grace and glories more divine,
Proclaiming sins forgiven:

There faith, bright cherub, points the way
To realms of everlasting day,

And opens all her heaven.

4 Then let the love which makes me blest, With cheerful praise inspire my breast, And ardent gratitude:

Let all my thoughts and passions tend
To thee, my Father and my Friend,
My soul's eternal good.
