PREFACE.

It is a seemly thing that our morning prayers should be accompanied by "Morning Vows." It is a mockery to ask for guidance and help, unless we are prepared to yield obedience and submission. The most eminent saints of all ages have been those, who, like Joshua, and David, and Paul, have been men of earnest decision and dauntless purpose.

of holy vow let us adopt. been prepared for daily use. that the greater number are This is simply a Scriptural proportion. In our vows, we are too often self-seeking. With the glory of God more steadfastly in view, our own holiness would be more rapidly advanced.

If we would have the vows of morning kept, we need to lift up a midday barrier against the

inroads of worldliness. It is but a fleeting moment that the masses among us can command. Yet that moment might be turned to profit, and for this purpose "Noontide Helps" may be welcome. A text and a verse, speedily but thoughtfully read, may no less speedily work a stimulating and strengthening effect.

The "Evening Voices" which follow are intended as a guide to the evening duty of self-examination,-a duty which, it is to be feared, many neglect, because some pervert, -a duty, nevertheless, which may bring with it a daily blessing, by deepening our penitence, quickening our zeal, and giving definiteness to our prayers and praises.

May the God of Bethel, the God of Zion, the God who in public and in private draws near to His people with a blessing, grant us to know more and more the privilege of ❝ Daily Communion with Himself.

Daily Communion.

MORNING :

:

JANUARY 1.

"This will we do, if God permit.' -Heb. vi. 3.

Our hearts shall beat for Thee alone;
Our lives shall make Thy goodness known.

NOON :

"The Lord...guided them on every side."-2 Chron. xxxii. 22.

Whate'er the path these mortal feet may trace, Breathe through my soul the blessings of Thy grace.

EVENING:

Have I sought-and have I found— a New Year's blessing from on high? (Numb. vi. 24-26.)

The night is come, the hour for peaceful rest; O Saviour, bless us,-then we must be blest.

[blocks in formation]

"We will bless the Lord from this time forth, and for evermore." Psa. cxv. 18.

'Tis His to number out our days;
'Tis ours to spend them for His praise.

NOON:

"He led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation: oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness."-Psa. cvii. 7, 8.

My soul with pleasure shall obey,
And follow where He leads the way.

EVENING:

Have I taken God for the Guide of my life? (Psa. lxxiii. 24.)

Then bravely I can meet each day,
And fear it not, come what come may.
My heart grows strong; all fear must fly,
When once I feel Thy love, Most High!
