MORNING.

"Mine hand shall not be -1 Sam. xxiv. 12, 13.

[blocks in formation]

Much forgiven, may I learn
Love for hatred to return;
Then assured my heart shall be,
Thou, my God, hast pardon'd me.

NOON:

"Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." Luke xxiii.34. Thy foes might hate, despise, revile; Thy friends unfaithful prove;

Unwearied in forgiveness, still
Thy heart could only love.

EVENING:

Do I love my enemies?-(Matt. v. 44.)

So does the fragrant sandal bow,

In meek forgiveness, to its doom,
And o'er the axe, at every blow,
Shed in abundance rich perfume.

MORNING :-
:-

"I will help thee;...let us behave ourselves valiantly."-1 Chron. xix. 12, 13.

Help one another, help!
The fainting heart revive;

Lift

up

the fear-enfeebled hand;

Keep dying hope alive.

[blocks in formation]

"Safety (marg. victory) is of the Lord."-Prov. xxi. 31.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus!
The strife will not be long;
This day, the noise of battle,-
The next, the victor's song.

EVENING:

Am I helpful to the weak, and do I sustain the falling?—(Job iv. 3, 4.)

O happy, happy, who love's task fulfil, Who their true loving Lord do copy still, And for Love's sake by Love do execute Love's will.

MORNING :

"I will surely show thee kindness for...thy father's sake."-2 Sam. ix. 7.

Thy father's friend forsake not,
But show him kindness due;
And summer-friends mistake not
For the ever-faithful few.

NOON:

"The memory of the just is blessed." -Prov. x. 7.

Lov'd while on earth! nor less belov'd tho' Think not I envy you your crown. [gone! No! if I could, I would not call you down; Tho' slower is my pace, to you I follow on.

EVENING:

Am I following those who have gone before to glory?—(Heb. vi. 11, 12.)

I'll follow on,

Leaning on Jesus all the way,
Who now and then lets fall a ray
Of comfort from His throne.

MORNING :

"Daniel purposed...that he would not defile himself."-Dun. i. 8.

O for a persevering power

To keep Thy just commands!

We would defile our hearts no more,
No more pollute our hands.

[blocks in formation]

"In malice, be ye children; but in understanding, be men." I Cor.xiv.20. Keep, Lord, our souls for ever young, For ever undefiled;

Nor let the gifts of manhood drown
The graces of the child.

EVENING:

Does my soul need cleansing ?—(1

John i. 7.)

Jesus, my great High-priest, has died;
I seek no sacrifice beside;

His blood did once for all atone,

And now He pleads before the throne.

MORNING :

"As for me, I will walk in mine integrity."-Psa. xxvi. 11.

Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;
Disperse my sins as morning dew;

Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

NOON:

"A sound heart is the life of the flesh."-Prov. xiv. 30.

My cares, I give you to the wind,
And shake you off like dust;

Well may I trust my all with Him
With whom my soul I trust.

EVENING:

Does my soul need refreshing ?(Deut. xxxii. 2.)

Oh, speak a blessing, gracious Lord;
Thy blessing has a soothing power;
On toil-worn hearts Thy gentle word
Falls softly as the evening shower.
