PREFACE.

THE Authoress of this work having already introduced herself to an encouraging publie in former juvenile works, and her friends, or subscribers, having been and are of that class of it whose theological and moral principles have made, and are making, them objects of admiration and imitation, and whose names she considers as so many bright stars among the list of one she cannot but speak, as God has called him to that rest which remaineth to the people of God-one whose voice has so often ascended publicly to the throne of grace, and many at present feel the full force of the following words :—

"Oh! let us dwell with solemn thought

On all the words of truth he gave;

The lesson to the heart is brought,
When sorrow muses o'er the grave;"

-she again intrudes herself upon the notice of those encouragers by means of this little volume, in which she has endeavoured to elucidate (by means of pleasing conversation) the interesting science of Entomology, which cannot but be amusing, even to the little urchin that may chase a butterfly.

She intends using it as her former oneas a class-book-as she has found them a great stimulus to enquiry.

Pupils: How do you do, dear Miss? We hope you have not been dull without us, during our visit with uncle Charles?

Governess: I am quite well, I thank you, my dears, and have not been by any means dull, as I have spent part of the time with my much valued and Christian friend, Mrs. at Ashford, and the rest of it I have been very busy with your mamma, at the school. The girls have received their prizes. Your frocks, dear Hannah Mary, Agnes' night-gowns, and Flora's babies' caps, were received with grateful thanks from the girls in your classes: I hope they will reward you by being attentive:
