PREFACE This volume is the outgrowth of the remarkable soil investigations of the late F. H. King of the University of Wisconsin. Professor King had projected a book on Soil Management many years ago. For the past ten years he had been assembling material with this idea in mind. His untimely death prevented the fulfillment of this purpose, but fortunately for the agricultural and scientific world his widow, Mrs. C. B. King, has brought together such of his papers and lectures as contain materials that he would have worked into an organized form. His study of Chinese, Korean and Japanese agriculture was part of his plan for the work on Soil Management, which he was unwilling to put forth until he knew something of this oldest management with its present marvelous results.
