The object of the present Volume is to offer to the Public a greater variety of original epitaphs than has hitherto appeared, the want of such variety having generally led to the repetition of common-place and inapplicable inscrip

tions.

The sacred Scriptures will ever be the most suitable source of inscriptions for the grave, but the affections of human beings continually call for a more definite
