O, wean my affections from all things below, and fill me with ardent desires after heaven. Lord, fit me for thyself; and at thine own good time bring me to joys unspeakable and full of glory. Grant this, for the sake of thy only Son Jesus, my Saviour. Amen.

BISHOP KEN.

[For a blessing on the use of medicine.]

O MOST blessed and eternal Jesus, the great Physician of our souls, the Sun of righteousness arising with healing in thy wings, who disposest every great and little accident to the glory of God, and to the comfort of them that love and serve him, be pleased to bless the ministry of thy servant in order to mine ease and health; direct his judgment, prosper the medicines, and dispose the chances of my sickness fortunately, that I may feel the blessing and loving-kindness of the Lord in the ease or prevention of pain, and the restitution or preservation of health; and being restored to the society of the living and to thy solemn assemblies, I may praise thee and thy goodness secretly among the faithful, and in the congregation of the redeemed ones, here in the outer courts of the Lord, and hereafter in thine eternal temple. Amen.

BISHOP TAYLOR.

[Upon taking medicine.]

O LORD, the Father of mercies, and God of all consolation, our only help in time of need, I most humbly supplicate thy favour to thy faithful servant, lying under thy correction. Lay no more upon me than thou wilt enable me to bear. Consider my feeble mortal constitution, and proportion my distemper to my strength, that I may know how to bear it with a true Christian patience and resignation to thy divine will. Hear my complaints, and remove the cause of them, as shall seem to thee most expedient for me. Give a blessing to what I now take, in order to recovery of my lost health. Be thou my chief Physician, for thy direction cannot fail me. And seeing I put my whole trust in thee, vouchsafe of thy great mercy to administer to me in my necessity, and to grant me ease, and comfort, and health here in this world; and fit me for everlasting life with thee, and thy holy angels and saints, in the world to come, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

SPINCKES.

[For a sick person, when there is little hope of recovery.]

O FATHER of mercies, and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need; we fly

unto thee for succour in behalf of this thy servant, here lying under thy hand in great weakness of body. Look graciously upon him, O Lord; and the more the outward man decayeth, strengthen him, we beseech thee, so much the more continually with thy grace and Holy Spirit in the inner man. Give him unfeigned repentance for all the errors of his past life, and stedfast faith in thy Son Jesus; that his sins may be done away by thy mercy, and his pardon sealed in heaven, before he go hence, and be no more seen. We know, O Lord, that there is no word impossible with thee; and that, if thou wilt, thou canst even yet raise him up, and grant him a longer continuance amongst us: yet, forasmuch as in all appearance the time of his dissolution draweth near, so fit and prepare him, we beseech thee, against the hour of death, that after his departure hence in peace, and in thy favour, his soul may be received into thine everlasting kingdom, through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, thine only Son, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

LITURGY.

[A commendatory prayer for a sick person at the point of departure.]

O ALMIGHTY God, with whom do live the spirits of just men made perfect, after they

are delivered from their earthly prisons; we humbly commend the soul of this thy servant, our dear brother, into thy hands, as into the hands of a faithful Creator, and most merciful Saviour; most humbly beseeching thee, that it may be precious in thy sight. Wash it, we pray thee, in the blood of that immaculate Lamb, that was slain to take away the sins of the world; that whatsoever defilements it may have contracted' in the midst of this miserable and naughty world, through the lusts of the flesh, or the wiles of Satan, being purged and done away, it may be presented pure and without spot before thee. And teach us who survive, in this and other like daily spectacles of mortality to see how frail and uncertain our own condition is; and so to number our days, that we may seriously apply our hearts to that holy and heavenly wisdom, whilst we live here, which may in the end bring us to life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, thine only Son our Lord. Amen.

LITURGY.

We brought nothing into this world, neither may we carry any thing out of this world. The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away. Even as the Lord pleaseth, so cometh every

thing to pass. Lord.

Blessed be the name of the

Into thy merciful hands, O Lord, we commend the soul of this thy servant, now departing from the body; acknowledge, we meekly beseech thee, a work of thine own hands, a sheep of thine own fold, a lamb of thine own flock, a sinner of thine own redeeming. Receive him into the blessed arms of thy unspeakable mercy, into the sacred rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious estate of thy chosen saints in heaven.

God the Father, who hath created thee; God the Son, who hath redeemed thee; God the Holy Ghost, who hath infused his grace into thee,-be now evermore thy defence, assist thee in this thy last trial, and bring thee into the way of everlasting life. Amen.

Christ, that redeemed thee with his agony and bloody death, have mercy upon thee, and strengthen thee in this agony of death. Amen.

Christ Jesus, that rose the third day from death, raise up thy body again in the resurrection of the just. Amen.

Christ, that ascended into heaven, and now sitteth at the right hand of God, bring thee into the place of eternal happiness and joy. Amen.

God the Father preserve and keep thee; God the Son assist and strengthen thee
