HE Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;
he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul; he leadeth me in the

paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

THE WORKS OF GOD.

G He made the grass so green;

OD made the sky that looks so blue;

He made the flowers that smell so sweet,

In pretty color seen.

God made the sun that shines so bright,
And gladdens all I see;

It comes to give us heat and light;
How thankful should we be.

God made the pretty bird to fly;
How sweetly has she sung;
And though she flies so very high,
She won't forget her young.

God made the cow to give nice milk,
The horse for me to use;

I'll treat them kindly for His sake,
Nor dare His gifts abuse.

God made the water for my drink;
He made the fish to swim;

He made the tree to bear nice fruit;

Oh, how should I love Him.

THE USE OF FLOWERS.

OD might have bade the earth bring forth
Enough for great and small,

The oak tree, and the cedar tree,

Without a flower at all.

He might have made enough, enough,

For every want of ours;

For luxury, medicine, and toil,

And yet have made no flowers.

The ore within the mountain mine
Requireth none to grow,

Nor doth it need the lotus flower

To make the river flow.

The clouds might give abundant rain,
The nightly dews might fall,

And the herb that keepeth life in man
Might yet have drunk them all.

Then wherefore, wherefore were they made
All dyed with rainbow light,
All fashion'd with supremest grace,
Upspringing day and night —

Springing in valleys green and low,
And on the mountains high,
And in the silent wilderness,
Where no man passeth by?

Our outward life requires them not,
Then wherefore had they birth?
To minister delight to man,

To beautify the earth;

To whisper hope- to comfort man
Whene'er his faith is dim;

For whoso careth for the flowers

Will care much more for Him!

WE THANK THEE.

OR flowers that bloom about our feet

FOR

For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet;
For song of bird and hum of bee;
For all things fair we hear or see,

Father in heaven, we thank thee!

For blue of stream and blue of sky;
For pleasant shade of branches high;
For fragrant air and cooling breeze;
For beauty of the blooming trees,

Father in heaven, we thank thee!

For mother-love and father-care,
For brothers strong and sisters fair;
For love at home and school each day;
For guidance, lest we go astray,—

Father in heaven, we thank thee!

For thy dear, everlasting arms,
That bear us o'er all ills and harms;
For blessed words of long ago,
That help us now thy will to know, -
Father in heaven, we thank thee!

A

A SONG OF SUMMER.

CUCKOO sat on a tree and sang,
"Summer is coming, coming;"

And a bee crept out of the hive and began
Lazily humming, humming.
