Estimate of the cost of completing the Cumberland road in the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, to the city of Jefferson. JOS. G. TOTTEN, Engineer Department, Washington, January 9, 1845. SIR: Your letter of the 6th instant, inquiring "the amount of money expended for the construction of the Cumberland road" in the States of "Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois," has been referred to this office. In reply, I have the honor to state, that the appropriations for the road through the States of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, were made under one common head of the "Cumberland road east of the Ohio;" and that the accounts and expenditures have been so kept, and not separated as to the amounts expended in each State. There may be, however, among the records of the office, some statement that will show the cost in each of these States, for which search is now being made, and if found will be communicated to you. In the mean time I have thought it might be agreeable to you to know, and might probably answer your present purpose, that the whole sum appropriated for the road east of the Ohio, or expended in the States of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, amounts to The total expenditure in Ohio has been The total expenditure in Indiana The total expenditure in Illinois Total Very respectfully, your obedient servant, - $2,812,034 21 2,077,631 06 1,128,289 50 742,445 30 6,760,400 07 · JOS. G. TOTTEN, Hon. ROBERT SMITH, House of Representatives. Colonel and Chief Engineer. ENGINEER DEPARTMENT, Washington, January 13, 1845. SIR: I have been unsuccessful in finding, among the records of this office, any data that will furnish the cost of the construction of the Cumberland road in either of the States of Maryland, Pennsylvania, or Virginia. The whole cost of the road in these three States, as stated in my letter of the 9th instant, has been $2,812,034 21. Of this sum there was spent, under the direction of the From 1827 to 1832, the repairs of the road, upon the plan $1,728,714 00 145,950 00 The cost of these changes and permanent repairs, with the toll houses, gates, &c., was Making the total cost, as before stated $937,370 21 2,812,034 21 The accounts for these various expenditures having been all rendered under one general head, ("the Cumberland road east of the Ohio," under which the appropriations were made,) it would now be impossible to ascertain the expenditures in the different States. The cost in each State can, however, be obtained approximately. The whole length of the road, from Cumberland to the Ohio river, is 132.3 miles. If we, then, suppose that the cost per mile in each State I hope this approximation to the expenditures in the States of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia may answer your purposes. Very respectfully, your obedient servant, Hon. ROBERT SMITH, JOS. G. TOTTEN, Colonel and Chief Engineer. |
