"What cage?" asked the Jackal. "Why," said the Man,

“this Tiger was in a cage,

and I let him out to get some water. Now he wants to eat me.

Is it fair that he do so?"

"Where is the cage?" said the Jackal. "I must see it."

So the Man and the Tiger

went back with the Jackal to the cage. "Oh," said the Jackal,

"so this is the cage. I see now.

The Man was in the cage,

and the Tiger came walking by."
"No, no," cried the Tiger,
"the Man was not in the cage."
"Oh," said the Jackal, "I see.

The Tiger was in the Man,

and the Cage came walking by."

"No, no," cried the Tiger. "I was in the cage."

"Well," said the Jackal,

"how can I tell what is fair

when I did not see it? Go into the cage,

and let me see where you were." The Tiger went into the cage. "I was here," he said.

The Jackal shut the door of the cage. Then he laughed and said,

"Well, well, Brother Tiger,

I think you will stay there,

for no one will let you out again. "Good-day, Brother Man.

Your way is that way, and my way is this way."

So the Man went one way,

and the Jackal went the other way, and the Tiger sat in the cage.

East Indian Folk Tale.

[graphic][merged small]

Once there was a little Kitty, White as the snow;

In a barn she liked to frolic,
Long time ago.

In the barn a little Mousie
Ran to and fro,

For she heard the little Kitty,
Long time ago.

Two black eyes had little Kitty, Black as a sloe;

And they saw the little Mousie, Long time ago.

Four soft paws had little Kitty, Paws soft as snow;

And they caught the little Mousie, Long time ago.

Nine white teeth had little Kitty,
All in a row;

And they bit the little Mousie,
Long time ago.

When the teeth bit little Mousie,
Mousie cried out, "Oh!"
But she slipped away from Kitty,
Long time ago.

The Camel and the Jackal

A Camel and a little Jackal lived by a river. The little Jackal liked to play tricks.

Now every day the Jackal went down to the river to eat crabs.

When he had eaten all the crabs he could find, he said to himself, "I know there are more crabs on the other side of the river. I can not swim, but the Camel can." He ran to the Camel and said, "I know where to find some good sugar cane. Do you want some?" The Camel liked sugar cane. "Oh, yes," he said. "Where is it?" "On the other side of the river," said the Jackal.
