REPORT OF VISITATION

OF

Almshouses in the Eighth Judicial

District.

By COMMISSIONER PUTNAM.

REPORT.

To the State Board of Charities:

The undersigned commissioner, representing the Eighth Judicial District, presents the following report on the almshouses in this district. This report is based largely upon the satisfactory notes taken by Inspector Kerr and also on such personal investigation as the commissioner has made. Generally speaking it may be said that the administration in the several almshouses is satisfactory, the inmates as a rule are furnished with comfortable quarters and no exception is taken to the food supplied to them, or the manner in which it is prepared.

ALLEGANY COUNTY.

The almshouse in this county was inspected September 8, 1898. The capacity is for about 90 inmates. At the date of inspection there were 60 inmates, of whom 37 were males and 23 females. Of this number there was one male child under two years of age and one female child over two years old. The expense per capita for maintenance for last preceding years was $1.05 per week, a saving of four cents over the per capita cost for the preceding year. During the year there have been 9 deaths, the average of those dying being 84 years. Four of the inmates are idiots, two males and two females. Twenty-three of the inmates, or 38 per cent. of the total number were over 73 years of age; of this number 18 were males and 5 were females.

The buildings are frame, well adapted to the purposes for which they were designed, the keeper's residence and adminis tration building being in the centre with separate buildings for men and women on each side, connected by covered corridors.
