Additional Prayers for Particular Occasions.

TRANSLATED FROM THE ANCIENT ENGLISH OFFICE.

["THE GREATER PRAYER" is used Morning and Evening when the Corpse is present.]

O God, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive; we humbly pray thee for the soul of thy servant N., whom thou hast to-day called out of this world: Deliver him not into the hands of his enemy, nor forget him for ever; but give thy holy Angels charge to receive him, and to bring him into the land of the living and forasmuch as he put his trust and confidence in thee, be pleased to count him worthy of the fellowship of thy saints. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end.

[On the anniversary in the Morning, and on the monthly return of the day of the death or interment in the Evening, THE LESSER PRAYER" is used.]

O God, whose nature and property is ever to have mercy and to forgive; be gracious to the soul of thy servant N., and put away all his sins; that being released from the bonds of death he may be counted worthy to pass into life. Through our Lord.

On the anniversary in the Evening. [Same as above, page 8.]

O God, the Lord of all mercy, grant unto the soul of thy servant N., the day of whose interment we do now this year commemorate, the place of refreshment, the blessedness of rest, and the brightness of thy divine light. Through.

NOTE. The Ancient English Office "In Vigiliis Mortuorum," differs in no respect of importance from that translated above. The variations lie almost entirely in the and Ry, which are occasionally made to change places, &c.; and in the following prayers added to or substituted for those above.

On the monthly return of the day in the Morning. Almighty and everlasting God, who art never entreated without hope of mercy, be gracious to the soul of thy servant N.; that, forasmuch as he departed out of this life in the confession of thy Holy Name, he may be numbered with thy saints. Through.

For Bishops or Priests departed. [EVENING.]

O God, who amongst Apostolic Priests hast caused thy servants to be thought worthy of the dignity of Bishops [or Priests]: grant, we beseech thee, that they may enjoy their everlasting fellowship in heaven, whose office for a little while they partook on earth. Through.

O God, whose mercy is infinite, accept our prayers for the souls of thy servants the Bishops [and Priests N.], and grant them the abode of light and joy in the fellowship of thy saints. Through.

A General Prayer for all Departed Souls. [EVENING.] O God, the Creator and Redeemer of all them that believe, grant to the souls of all thy faithful servants and handmaids departed the remission of all their sins that through pious supplications they may obtain the pardon they have always desired. Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The same. [MORNING.]

O Lord, we thy humble servants pray thee for the souls of all the Faithful departed; that thou wouldest release them from all their sins, and make them partakers of thy redemption. Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

And thou, Child, shalt be called the Prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people: for the remission of their sins.

Through the tender mercy of our God: whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us;

To give light to them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Grant them, O Lord eternal rest.

And let light perpetual: shine upon them.

ANT. I am the resurrection and the life; he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall : never die.

[The following Prayers are to be said kneeling as at Vespers.] Our Father.

Ry. But deliver us from evil.

[The following Psalm "De profundis," is not said here on the day of Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed, nor on the day of the Death or Interment of a Departed Person. Otherwise it is always said.]

PSAL. CXXX. De profundis.

Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice.

O let thine ears consider well: the voice of my complaint.

If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss O Lord, who may abide it?

For there is mercy with thee

thou be feared.

therefore shalt

I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for him: in his word is my trust.

My soul fleeth unto the Lord: before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch.

O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy and with him is plenteous redemp

tion.

And he shall redeem Israel: from all his sins.

Grant them, O Lord eternal rest.

And let light perpetual shine upon them.

V. From the gate of hell,

Ry. Deliver their souls, O Lord.

V. May they rest in peace.

V. O Lord, hear my prayer.

Ry. And let my cry come unto thee.

THE GRADUAL PSALMS *

Are proper to be used on the Wednesday of every week in Lent, unless superseded by one of the greater Festivals. In public they are said before Matins; in private as opportunity allows.

The first five Psalms are said without the Doxology, Glory be to the Father, &c.;" but at the end of the last," Grant them, O Lord, eternal rest, &c." is repeated.

There is no Antiphon.

PSAL. CXX. Ad Dominuт.

When I was in trouble I called upon the Lord : and he heard me.

Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue.

What reward shall be given or done unto thee, thou false tongue even mighty and sharp arrows, with hot burning coals.

Wo is me, that I am constrained to dwell with Mesech and to have my habitation among the tents of Kedar.

My soul hath long dwelt among them: that are enemies unto peace.

I labour for peace, but when I speak unto them thereof; they make them ready to battle.

PSAL. cxxi. Levavi oculos.

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help.
