Hear the rain patter upon the roof!

66 How beautiful is the rain!

After the dust and heat

In the broad and fiery street,

In the narrow lane,

How beautiful is the rain!" 6

Gusty and raw was the morning,

And the fog hung over the seas;
And its gray skirts rolling inland
Were torn by the mountain-trees." 8

And the sounding aisles of the dim woods rang To the anthem of the free." 10

LESSON L.

The chilling frost nips the flowers.
The snow is blown into deep drifts.
"The wind blew as 'twould blow its last;
The rattling showers rose on the blast;
The speedy gleams the darkness swallowed;
Loud, deep, and long, the thunder bellowed.",
"Now leaps the wind on the sleepy marsh,
And tramples the grass with terrified feet;
The startled river turns leaden and harsh:
You can hear the quick heart of the tempest

beat." 11

LESSON LI.

"Lightly and brightly breaks away The morning from her mantle gray, And the noon will look on a sultry day." "The crows flapped over by twos and threes, In the pool drowsed the cattle up to their knees. And the very leaves seemed to sing on the trees." 18. "And what is so rare as a day in June!

Then, if ever, come perfect days;

Then Heaven tries the Earth if it be in tune,
And over it softly her warm ear lays." 18

LESSON LII.

"Oh, loveliest, there the spring days come,
With blossoms, and birds, and wild bees' hum;
The flowers of summer are fairest there,
And freshest the breath of the summer air;
And sweetest the golden summer day

That is known as the 'children's hour.'" 15
