SPECIMENS OF EXAMINATION QUESTIONS.

EXAMINATION FOR CLERK OF THE SECOND GRADE,

AUGUST 29, 1895.

DIVISION I.

PENMANSHIP, ORTHOGRAPHY AND COMPOSITION.

1. Copy neatly and accurately the following:

Applications for admission to any examination in the Official Service may be made at any time, subject, however, to the restriction that they must be filed with the Chief Examiner at least one day before the day fixed for the examination. Such application shall be in writing in the form prescribed by the Board. Blank forms may be obtained of the Chief Examiner. Applications when filled out shall be filed with the Chief

Examiner.

2. Copy from dictation the following: [Dictated by the Examiner.] There is no need of seeking the aid of any prominent or influential person to secure an application blank or an examination, and no recommendations other than those provided for in the application blank should be forwarded to the Commission. No person shall be admitted to a regular schedule examination who has not previously filed an application for the particular examination which he seeks, on the form which will be furnished by the Commission upon request of the applicant.

3. Spell correctly the following words: [Dictated by the Examiner.] Essential; physician; considerate; character; intellectual; contingencies; desirous; conscientiously; reproach; affable.

4. Write a letter, properly dated and addressed, to Mr. Joshua Stark, containing not less than 150 words, telling him you are an applicant for the position of Clerk; what amount of schooling you have had and when

you left school; your age; what occupation or work you have been engaged in during the last five years, and by whom you have been employed during that period; where you are now working; and if not now working, where you worked last and why you quit; and what references you can give for efficiency and reliability. Sign your number, but not your name, to this letter.

DIVISION II.

ARITHMETIC.

1. Write in figures the following numbers:

3. Multiply 47,294 by 5,386.

4. Divide 8,597,988 by 4,284. Give the work in full.

5. Add together 49,258; 193,000; 48,112; and from their sum subtract the sum of 27,992 and 48,251. Give the work in full.

6. A housekeeper's account at the grocery is as follows: Aug. 1, bought 22 doz. eggs @ 15c per doz.; Aug. 4, 10 bu. potatoes @35c per bu.; Aug. 5, 3 sacks of flour @ $1.12 per sack; Aug. 6, paid grocer $5.60; Aug. 10, bought 4 boxes California plums @ 75c per box; Aug. 12, 3 baskets peaches @ $1.35 per basket; Aug. 14. 25 lbs. sugar @ 62c per lb.; Aug. 18, paid $11.25 on account. What is the balance due on this account? Give the work in full.

7. Make a bill of the account contained in the preceding question, in proper form for presentation, dating it Sept. 1, 1895, and using the names housekeeper and grocer for the names of the parties.

8. A man gave his note for $5,000 with interest at 7 per cent., dated Aug. 1, 1891, and payable on the 1st of March, 1895. What was the amount of the note at the latter date? Give the work in full.

9. A man bought a watch, a chain and a ring for $145. The watch cost six times as much as the chain, and the chain four times as much as the ring. What was the cost of each? Give the work in full.

10. Reduce 55%; 41228; 75%; % to their lowest common denominator. Give the work in full.

I.

AUGUST 29, 1895.

PENMANSHIP, ORTHOGRAPHY, AND COMPOSITION.

1. Copy neatly and accurately the following sentence:

No person is eligible to examination who is not a citizen of the United States, or who is physically disqualified for the service which he seeks, or who is habitually addicted to the use of intoxicating beverages to excess, or who has been guilty of crime or infamous or disgraceful conduct. 2. Exercise in writing from dictation.

3. Write a letter, properly dated and addressed, to Mr. George H. Benzenberg, containing not less than one hundred and fifty words, telling him that you are an applicant for the position of cement tester; what amount of schooling you have had and where; your age; what occupation or work you have been engaged in during the last five years, and by whom you have been employed during that period; where you are now working; and if not now working, where you worked last, and why you quit; and what references you can give for thorough honesty and reliability. Sign your number, but not your name, to the letter.

5. Give the names of the three largest cities on the Great Lakes, and the name of the State in which each is situated.

6. Give the number of the Ward in which you live and state by what Wards it is bounded.

7. What are the Wards on the West Side?

8. What are the Wards on the South Side?

9. Give the exact location of the two principal railway stations in this city.

10. Give the exact location of the Court House.

11. Give the exact location of the Exposition Building.

12. Give the exact location of the Water Works.

13. Give the names and locations of twelve of the principal bridges in the city.
