PREFACE.

Ir is, I am told, usual in launching a little work upon the "Wide, wide world," where, timidly and with many misgivings, it has to venture forth alone upon its uncertain way, to introduce it to the public by a few words, called a Preface; and most gladly would I conform to the general custom, had I an idea what to write.

All, then, that I can say by way of introduction is that I throw myself entirely on the kindness of my readers, trusting that they will not look with too severe and criticising an eye on its many defects and deficiencies, but take it merely for what it is intended, viz., an unpretending and truthful tale, the only recommendation of which may probably be, that it is of a religious and moral tendency.
