REMARKS OF CLERKS.

Supreme Court of Appeals at Richmond. NOTE No. 1.-In addition to the number of causes decided by the supreme court of appeals at Richmond, it has heard argued several other causes on the docket, and which are now in its hands for decision. It has also held terms of court at Staunton, Wytheville and Winchester, as required and authorized by law, during this year. Seventy-nine causes were assigned to the special court of appeals docket during this year. This court had, at the commencement of its sessions this year on the 3d of December, 1872, twenty-six causes left on its docket from the fifty assigned to it last year, making one hundred and five causes on its docket during this year. Of these, seventy-two have been decided and disposed of, seven remanded to the docket of the supreme court for special reasons, and twenty-six remain on its docket now to be disposed of.

Chancery Court of the City of Richmond. NOTE No. 2.-The number of final decrees are stated at only 219. This is the number stricken from the docket, but there are a large number of cases in which the decrees are final, so far as the principles of the cause are concerned, but kept on the docket for matters of detail. The number of pending causes (754) seems large, but a large majority are what are called sleepers.

First Circuit. NOTE No. 3.—Norfolk County: Under the act of the general assembly of Virginia, requiring certain causes to be removed from the docket of the county courts to the circuit courts, 45 law cases and 122 chancery causes have been placed in this report as cases removed from other courts.

Second Circuit. NOTE No. 4.-Sussex County: The number of causes, both in law and equity, reported as having been removed from other courts, are such as were pending on the first day of August, 1873, in the county court of Sussex, and removed to this court under the act of assembly of 1872 and 1873. I have reported them separately, so that the information as to the number in the county court is also afforded.

NOTE No. 5.-Greenesville County: I deem it proper to state that all the causes from other courts removed to this court, with the exception of one suit at law and one equity suit, were removed from the county court, under the act of assembly which took effect August 1st, 1873.
