A DITHYRAMBIC POEM,

FROM THE ITALIAN

OF

FRANCESCO REDI,

WITH

NOTES ORIGINAL AND SELECT.

BY LEIGH HUNT.

Come, thou monarch of the vine,
Plumpy Bacchus, with pink eyne:
In thy vats our cares be drown'd;
With thy grapes our hairs be crown'd;
Cup us, till the world goes round.

TO MR. JOHN HUNT.

MY DEAR JOHN,

I cannot send you, as I could wish,

a pipe of Tuscan wine, or a hamper of Tuscan sunshine, which is much the same thing; so in default of being able to do this, I do what I can, and send you, for a new year's present, a translation of a Tuscan bacchanal.

May it give you a hundredth part of the elevation which you have often caused to the

heart of

Your affectionate Brother,

LEIGH HUNT.

Florence, January 1st, 1825.
