HERALD (FORMERLY GRAPHIC.)

This promising three-year old was sired by Smuggler, whose record of 2.15 places him at the head of the list of trotting stallions. His breeding, on the side of his dam, (see pedigree,) shows many crosses of Messenger blood, and two very distinct crosses of Morgan through Sherman and Woodbury, the best sons of Justin Morgan. This colt was exhibited at the New England fair in 1874, and again in 1875, and received the first premium on both occasions. In 1876, he was shown at the Centennial Exhibition, and the medal of honor, and highest diploma of merit were awarded him in the two-year old class for trotting stallions. Hercules' gait is a clear level trot, is a very fast walker, and shows evidence of being possessed of great speed.

REPORTS ON COUNTY FAIRS.

[NOTE. By a resolution of the executive committee, the secretary 66 was directed to assign to the several members of the board, the duty of visiting the societies represented in this board, one member to each society, at the time of holding their annual exhibitions, who shall make report to the secretary of this board of such matters as may be of sufficient interest." A succession of storms at the usual time of holding exhibitions, prevented a general attendance to this duty. The following reports have been furnished. When this feature in the duty of the Board is fairly understood by its members, and appreciated by the county societies, it will form a valuable means of interchanging opinions as to the proper mode of managing such exhibitions. Owing to stormy weather, and the general depression of business of all kinds, the fall fairs were generally but poorly attended, and in many cases resulted in pecuniary loss to the society.]

BERKS COUNTY FAIR.

BY W. S. ROLAND, Member from York.

In accordance with a resolution passed by the State Board of Agriculture, the undersigned was appointed to visit the annual exhibition of the Berks County Agricultural and Horticultural Society in an official capacity, and having attended to that duty, submits the following report :

Berks county has a population of one hundred and six thousand. Reading is the county seat, with a population of forty thousand.

The Berks county fair grounds are situated at the head of Penn street, the principal business street in the city of Reading. They embrace in extent fifty-four acres, and were obtained from the county commissioners, or a lease for ninety-nine years dated November 21, 1864. The grounds are considered valuable, and the objects of the society being strictly agricultural, intended solely for the benefit of the agricultural and mechanical interests of the county, a mere nominal annual rental of one dollar is demanded for their use.

The Berks County Agricultural Society was organized January 13, 1852, and held its first annual fair in the month of October of that year. Since then, annual fairs have been held, except in the years of 1862, '63, and '64, when the grounds were occupied by the United States Government for hospital and camp purposes.
