Down the swift stream we glide apace, And carry death within;

Then break, and scarcely leave a trace To show that we have been.

The man, the wisest of our kind,
Who length of days had seen,
To birth and death a time assign'd,
But none to life between :-
Yet O! what consequences clse
This transient state below!
Eternal joys; or, losing those,
Interminable wo!

THE BAD.

OF

FIRST LINES.

According to thy gracious word

A cloud lay cradled near the setting sun

Across a trackless sea

Adieu, ye toyish reeds, that once could please
Again the balmy zephyr blows

Alas! what hourly dangers rise

All after pleasures as I rid one day

All praise to thee, my God, this night
Almighty God, in humble prayer

Along the dim valley, aslant from the mountain
And now, my soul, another year
Another leaf of finished time we turn

As o'er the past my memory strays

As pants the wearied hart for cooling springs
At the close of the day when the hamlet is still
Author of the whole creation

Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Awake, sweet harp of Judah, wake
Awake our souls, and bless his name
Aye, let us think of him awhile

Be with me, Lord, where'er I go
Before Jehovah's awful throne
Behold the mountain of the Lord
Behold the Saviour on the cross

Bless thou the living Lord, my Soul
Bless'd be the everlasting God

Blest are they

.

Bold is the wretch, and blasphemous the man
Brightest and best of the sons of the morning
Brother, thou art gone before us

But if there be one attribute divine

But hear the word divine, to me convey'd

But who shall scan the future? as we pace

Ere the morning's sy ray
Erewhile of music, and ethereal mirth
Even thus amid thy pride and luxury
Exalt, O Earth, thy heavenly King

Father of all, in whom alone

Father of peace, and God of love

Few, few and evil are thy days

Fond mother! how those mild and mellow'd orbs.

For thou wert born of woman! thou didst come
Fountain of being, Source of good.

From Greenland's icy mountains

Full of trembling expectation

Gentle, as if descended from the skies
Give me the faith which can remove

Glory to the eternal God

Glory to the Father give.

God of my life, and all my powers.

God's perfect power did this great world create

Grace does not steel the faithful heart

Greatest of beings! source of life!

Great God! how awful is the scene

Hark, the glad sound, the Saviour comes

Hail to thee! thou little fly

Hark! 'tis the bell with solemn toll

Hast thou been in the woods with the honey-bee!
He cometh, he cometh, the death-dealing king
Hearken, ye hills, ye mountains, hear
Heaven hath confirm'd the great decree

He left his Christian friends and native strand
He that by faith sees not the world of spirits.
He who sins from day to day..

He who, upon the world's vain shore
Higher, higher, will we climb
How are thy servants blest, O Lord
How bright these glorious spirits shine
How many kindred souls are fled
How short is the life of a man
How soft is the sound of the river
How sweet and solemn all alone

How sweet, how heavenly is the sight
How swift the torrent rolls

I ask not honour, pomp, or praise

I bade the Day-break bring to me

I deemed it he-for each word thou hast spoken

I knew them when the rosiest light of love was on their brow

I know that my Redeemer lives

I'm not ashamed to own my Lord
In a land of strange delight
Inform me, virtue, is it true
In mercy, Lord, remember me
In sleep's serene oblivion laid.
Inspirer and hearer of prayer
It was the winter wild

Jairus heard, and doubt and fear
Jerusalem, my happy home
Jesus, my strength, my hope

Jesus, Thou Man of sorrows, born.

King of the dead! how long shall sweep
Know then this truth, enough for man to know

Leaves have their time to fall

Let observation with extensive view
Life is a sea-how fair its face.

Life's May-day may be jocund, and its eve
Lo, at the couch where infant beauty sleeps
Lord, how delightful 'tis to see
Lord, I am thine, but thou wilt prove
Lord, I believe a rest remains .
Lord of my life, O may thy praise
Lord of the harvest, God of grace.
Lord of the Sabbath, hear us pray
Lord, teach us how to pray aright

Lord, Thou hast search'd and seen me through
Love suffers long, love envies not

Man is an insect, life his cell
Mark the soft falling snow
Messiah at thy glad approach
Mount of horrors! Calvary
Music of the bough that waves.

My days, and weeks, and months, and years
My dear Redeemer, and my Lord
My God! all nature owns thy sway

My God, I heard this day.

My God, I humbly call Thee mine.

My God, I now from sleep awake
My God, my life, my love

My God, thy service well demands
My gracious Lord, I own thy right

My great Preserver! to thy gracious hand
My heart goes with thee, dauntless man.
My song shall bless the Lord of all

My soul before Thee prostrate lies
My soul, go boldly forth

Night is the time for rest.

No mortal eye hath seen thy bed
Not winds to voyages at sea
Now let a spacious world arise
Now may the Spirit's holy fire
Now the last sleep

Now to thine altar, Lord.

O fairest flower, no sooner blown but blasted

O Father, glorify thy name

O Father! raise me from these clouds of time

O for a thousand tongues to sing

O first-born of creation, glad wert thou.

Oft hast Thou, Lord, in tender love

O God, how doth thy love and grace

O God of Bethel, by whose hand

O God of Abram, by whose hand

O happy day that fix'd my choice

Oh, lov'd and lost, thy widow'd mother's pride
Oh! that I were as in the days

Oh thou, by long experience tried.

Oh: thou didst die for me, thou Son of God.
Oh! thou that dwellest on the heavens so hign
Oh! thou that wilt not break the bruised reed
O let me, heavenly Lord, extend
O Lord, my God, in mercy turn
O Lord our God, thy light and truth

O may the power which melts the rock
On Carmel's brow the wreathy vine
On Horeb's brow the Tishbite stands

O Sacred Providence, who, from end to end
O Saviour, is thy promise Hed.

O stranger, welcome as a long-lost dream
O that mankind would praise the Lord
O Thou from whom all goodness flows.
O Thou, my light, my life, my joy
O Thou, the first, the greatest friend
O Thou, to whose all-searching sight
O Thou unknown, almighty cause
O Thon, who hast at thy command
O Thou, whose wise paternal love
Our heavenly Father, hear

She bow'd ber head before the throne

Should some seraph wing his flight.

Show pity, Lord; O Lord, forgive.

Sing to the Lord! let harp, and lute, and voice

Sing with me! sing with me

Sleep, little baby! sleep

Sing, ye redeemed of the Lord

Soldier, go-but not to claim

So Satan fell; and strait a fery globe

Soon shall this earthly frame, dissolved

Stern daughter of the voice of God.

Spirit of Death! whose outstretch'd pennonsdread

Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright

Still shall unthinking man substantial deem

[blocks in formation]

Sweet Eve! I love to wander 'mid thy shades

"Tell them, I am,' Jehovah said

That first farewell to home and friends

The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold
The beam repelling mists arise

The cheerful supper done, with serious face
Thee, O my God and King

Thee will love, my strength and tower:
I
