PRE FACE

The present volume, which completes the series of Lesson Books originally projected by the Editors, has been prepared on the same general plan and principles as those which have preceded it.

I. It offers, in the space of two pages, an adequate and varied portion for each day's instruction ; every lesson being complete in itself, the notes furnishing a clue to all needful explanations.

II. The analyses appended at the foot of the page include not merely the roots of words, but every thing requisite in order to secure the entire comprehension of the lesson by the pupil.

It differs from its predecessors in the following points.

First. The lessons are all connected and systematic, forming, when read, a course of instruction in English and General History, the Elements of Physics, and Natural History.

Secondly. The geographical questions and chronological notes, together with the definitions and roots, the explanations of scientific terms, and the various statistical and other tables embodied in the Appendix, form a mass of information never before collected in one volume for the purposes of school instruction.

The book is thus eminently a Text Book, complete in itself, yet affording facilities for additional teaching to the utmost extent of the teacher's capacity.

Offering in the space of 324 pages an enlarged course of instruction in History, Physics, and Natural History, it may fairly lay claim to the character of the cheapest and most comprehensive Class Book yet offered to the public.

To make it what it is, neither labour nor expense has been spared. The greater part of the lessons have been specially written for the book; and those which have been compiled, have undergone careful correction and revision. It is due to Mr. Goodrich, of Boston, in the United States, to say that the historical portions have been mainly selected from his popular volume, entitled “ History based on Geography;" but almost every paragraph has undergone careful revision, and been abridged or amplified as circumstances seemed to require.
