Young was born in 1941, the youngest of 13 children, on a hilltop farm in Woodfin just north of Asheville, North Carolina. Young worked on newspapers in North Carolina and New York and for United Press International in Raleigh, New York, and Saigon. He arrived in Saigon the night of the Tet Offensive in 1968 and covered the fighting there, the battle for Hue, and the Siege of Khe Sanh. He has published articles in many national magazines and newspapers including Harper's, Rolling Stone, Ms., The New York Times, and The Washington Post. He is the author of New York Times bestseller The David Kopay Story, which he wrote with the pro football player.
