FOREWORD HE AUTHOR FIRMLY BELIEVES THAT IT WILL TH BE AN IRREPARABLE CALAMITY TO EXTEND FURTHER THE Suffrage to WOMEN: and, if this be so, it is important that Woman should be aware of that fact, and equally so that Man should see clearly how to vindicate himself from the charge of oppression and tyranny. He firmly believes that it would diminish the influence over voters and legislators, now exercised by the best women, by reason of their being outside the political arena. He also believes that there are other elements in the project which, in the course of time, may, and probably will, injure both the People and the Government. Further, he believes that many of the leaders of the movement have been and are now reckless both in speech and writing, and have been so from the beginning of this contest. John Stuart Mill said that "No slave is a slave to the same length and in as full a sense of the word as a wife is". He also said, "I deny that any one knows or can know the nature of the two sexes as long as they have been seen in their present relation to one another;" and yet he demanded votes for women.
