Chase from our minds the infernal foe,
And peace, the fruit of love, bestow;
And lest our feet should step astray,
Protect and guide us in the way.

Plenteous of grace, descend from high,
Rich in Thy seven-fold energy!
Make us eternal truths receive,
And practise all that we believe.
Give us Thyself that we may see
The Father, and the Son, by Thee.

Immortal honour, endless fame,
Attend the Almighty Father's name ;
The Saviour Son be glorified,

Who for lost man's redemption died;
And equal adoration be,

Eternal Paraclete! to Thee. Amen.

When our heads are bowed with woe,

When our bitter tears o'erflow,

When we mourn the lost, the dear,
Gracious Son of Mary, hear.

Thou our throbbing flesh hast worn,
Thou our mortal griefs hast borne,
Thou hast shed the human tear:
Gracious Son of Mary, hear.

When the sullen death-bell tolls
For our own departing souls;

When our final doom is near,
Gracious Son of Mary, hear.

Thou hast bowed the dying head;
Thou the blood of life hast shed;
Thou hast filled a mortal bier;
Gracious Son of Mary, hear.

When the heart is sad within
With the thought of all its sin;
When the spirit shrinks with fear,
Gracious Son of Mary, hear.

Thou the shame, the grief hast known,
Though the sins were not thine own,
Thou hast deigned their load to bear,
Gracious Son of Mary, hear.

Lord, in this Thy mercy's day,
Now, before it pass away,
On our knees we fall and pray.

Holy Jesu, grant us tears,

Fill us with heart-searching fears,
Ere that awful doom appears.

Supplication on us pour,

Let us now kneel at the door,
Ere it close for evermore.

By Thy night of agony,
By Thy supplicating cry,
By Thy willingness to die,

By Thy tears of bitter woe
For Jerusalem below,

Let us not Thy love forego.

'Neath Thy wings let us have place,
Lest we lose this day of grace,

Ere we shall behold Thy face.

P. M.

When gathering clouds around I view,
And days are dark, and friends are few,
On Him I lean, Who not in vain
Experienced every human pain:
He feels my griefs, allays my fears,
And counts and treasures up my tears.
If aught should tempt my soul to stray
From heavenly wisdom's narrow way,
To fly the good I would pursue,
Or do the sin I would not do,

Still He, Who felt temptation's power,
Shall guard me in that dangerous hour.
When vexing thoughts within me rise,
And sore dismayed my spirit dies,
When writhing on the bed of pain
I supplicate for rest in vain,

Still, still my soul shall think on Thee,
Thy bloody sweat and agony.

And oh, when I have safely past
Through every conflict but the last,
Still, still unchanging watch beside
My dying bed, for Thou hast died;

Then bear me to that happier shore, Where Thou shalt mark my woes no more. 95

P. M.

Why should I fear the darkest hour,
Or tremble at the tempter's power?
Jesus vouchsafes to be my tower:
When earthly comforts fade and die,
Though others weep; yet why should I?
Jesus still lives, and still is nigh.

Though all the flocks and herds were dead,
My soul a famine need not dread,
For Jesus is my living bread:

I know not what may soon betide,
Or how my wants shall be supplied;
But Jesus knows, and will provide.
Though sin would fill me with distress,
The throne of grace I dare address,
For Jesus is my Righteousness:
Against me earth and hell combine;
But on my side is power divine;
Jesus is All, and He is mine.

Father of all, high praise to Thee,
Thy Son, and Spirit's Majesty :

As was, and is, and aye shall be. Amen.

Jesus, my strength, my hope,
On Thee I cast my care,

With humble confidence look up
And know Thou hearest my prayer.

Give me on Thee to wait
Till I can all things do;
On Thee, Almighty to create,
Almighty to renew.

Give me a heart prepared
And armed with jealous care,
For ever standing on its guard,
And watching unto prayer.

A soul inured to pain,

To hardship, grief, and loss,
Bold to take up, firm to sustain,
The consecrated Cross.

This blessing, above all,
Always to pray, I want,
Out of the deep on Thee to call,
And never, never faint.

To God the Father, Son,
And Spirit, glory be,

As was, and is, and shall be so
To all eternity. Amen.

C. M.

O Thou, from Whom all goodness flows,
I lift my heart to Thee;

In all my sorrows, conflicts, woes,
Good Lord, remember me.
