PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION.

Ir will be observed that, in this Collection, those Hymns only are assigned to the Church seasons, the use of which it will be well to confine to certain occasions; while other Hymns, which are indeed suitable for those seasons, but need not be limited to one portion of the Church's Year, will be found referred to at the end of the Special Hymns.

In making the selection, regard has been had to week-day as well as Sunday services. Hymns that are found too long may be shortened by omitting the verses within brackets.

For Hymns 9, 17, 89, 102, 117, and 118, the Compiler is indebted to Miss C. Winkworth's "Lyra Germanica," published by Longman and Co.; for Hymn 181 to the Editors of the "Parish Hymn Book"; and to Messrs. Brown and Co. for Hymns 175, 176, 186, 188 from the "Salisbury Hymnal." Hymns 180, 185, 189 are inserted by permission of the Rev. Sir Henry W. Baker, Bart., and his Co-Compilers of "Hymns Ancient and Modern," in which collection appropriate tunes will be found.

Hymn 187, from the "Hymnal Noted," has been appended by the kindness of Messrs. Novello.

No. 3, a translation by the Rev. Dr. Irons, and Nos. 22 and 122, translations by the Rev. J. M. Neale, are Mr. Masters' copyright, and printed by his permission.

The gaps in the numbering are occasioned by the omission of a few of the Hymns included in the former editions.
