Mathematics for ESL Learners

Practical examples from everyday life, spanning personal financial matters to traveling and even cooking conversions are the lessons offered in this useful guide. The vast majority of older students and adults who come to America come from countries that use the metric system. Learning a new system for measuring, telling time, and so forth is confusing at best and makes adapting to our society much harder. Besides being useful in its own right, applied mathematics provides a wonderful opportunity to use the conversions between the American Standard Measurement system and metric as a basic teaching tool. Mathematics also serves as a means to improve vocabulary and writing skills. Despite the thousands of ESL programs in existence, learning practical mathematics is often entirely overlooked. Mathematics for ESL Learners attempts to remedy that.

Will be helpful to teachers and students as well as community centers, public libraries, community colleges, and language centers.
