The number of patents issued in the United Kingdom between 1881 and 1897 shows the following extraordinary rate of increase:

MERCANTILE FAILURES IN THE UNITED STATES.

The following statement of mercantile failures is from "Bradstreet's annual report. It is proper to explain that only those business embarrassments are included as failures in which total fiabilities are in excess of actual assets, except in the case of banks, the suspension of payment by which during business hours is regarded as a failure:

NOTE.-Iron, woolens, and cottons include all the branches of those manufactures; machinery includes implements and tools; lumber includes saw, planing, sash, and door mills, carpenters and coopers; clothing includes millinery and furnishings: hats include furs and gloves; chemicals include drugs, fertilizers, paints, and oils: printing and books include engraving and maps; milling includes baking: leather and shoes include makers of harness, saddlery, trunks, and rubber goods; liquors include tobacco, wines, brewers, and beer; glass includes earthenware, pottery, brick, lime, and cement; groceries include meats and fish; hotels include restaurants; dry goods include carpets and curtains; furniture includes crockery: hardware includes stoves and tools, and jewelry includes clocks and all except incorporated railway companies.
