I.-EXAMINATIONS. NOTE.-In addition to the above, 170 sets of papers, examined and marked by the central board, were canceled for various reasons. The 170 sets were made up as follows: Clerk-copyists, 9 sets; specials, 29 sets; railway mail service, 123 sets; Indian service, 9 sets. Nearly 51 per cent of those who took special examinations were examined at Washington, D. C. NOTE. In addition to the above, 37 persons were examined for transfer from local post-offices to the railway mail service, of whom 32 passed, 3 failed, and 2 were canceled. The legal residences were distributed as follows: Illinois, 15 passed, 2 failed, 1 canceled; Iowa, 1 passed, 1 canceled; Massachusetts, 9 passed, 1 failed; Minnesota, 1 passed; Ohio, 1 passed; Pennsylvania, 4 passed; Washington (State), 1 passed. Also, 1 person, a resident of Virginia, passed a noncompetitive examination for an excepted position. (See Table No. 5.) Twenty of the railway mail competitors took the supplementary examinations of typewriting and stenography, of whom 1 passed and 3 failed in typewriting, and 1 passed and 15 failed in stenography. The legal residences were distributed as follows: Typewriting-New York, 1 passed and 3 failed. Stenography-Georgia, 4 failed; Minnesota, 1 passed, 3 failed; New York, 4 failed; Texas, 4 failed.
