TO THE SHADE OF JEFFERSON.

Pure and illustrious spirit! Borne beyond the confines of flattery, thou art still sensible to the voice of truth, the edict of justice, and the homage of sincerity. To thee, I here offer up this humble tribute, of an unfeigned admiration, for thy deeds and thy virtues. To thy labours, we are indebted for the most noble conceptions, the most exalted designs, the most beneficial achievements for our country. To thee, we are indebted as a people, for the DECLARATION OF OUR INDEPENDENCE; for the abolishment of the LAWS OF ENTAIL AND PRIMOGENITURE, and other sanative and benevolent schemes, having for their object, the equalization of fortunes, the just distribution of property, and the diffusive happiness of the whole people. Aspiring to imitate thy virtues, permit me to inscribe to thee this humble volume.

True, thy body has departed from us, and thine immortal part has flown to its congenial abode, but thy spirit yet dwells among us, to stimulate to deeds of benevolence, and reforms conducive to the general good. Continue, bright spirit, to shed thy benign influence over us, leading us onward in the march of perfection, still devoted to LIBERTY, to SCIENCE, to JUSTICE, to PHILANTHROPY. Conduct us in the path that will lead the PRODUCERS of wealth, to an equal share of its enjoyments and possessions, until EQUITY and RIGHT shall establish the throne in the land, to the full consummation of that inestimable blessing-AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE.
