THIS work is an inquiry into the present relations of science to Christian thought. At no former period has the subject assumed aspects of deeper interest than now. The last twenty, and especially the last ten, years have been marked by great progress in the chief branches of natural science. A wide field has been surveyed, and a great number of facts have been brought to light, bearing, more or less closely, on revealed truth. Much new and fresh material has been accumulated, of great value to all who "take pleasure in seeking out the works of the Lord," and who love to trace in Nature the goings of Him who is great in his Church, as a God of righteousness, grace, and love. An effort is here made to bring some of this material within the reach of all, and to render it popularly interesting.
