JOSEPH IN PRISON.

WHEN Joseph was first sent into the prison he was put with the rest of the prisoners, but he behaved himself so well, that after a short time the keeper of the prison employed him to take charge of the others. The keeper soon found him so useful, and steady, and honest, that he left everything in his charge; and Joseph did his duty thoroughly, and behaved himselt so well that the keeper did not trouble himself to look after anything he had put under his care, for Joseph's conduct earned for him a good character, and the keeper knew he could always rely upon him.

After these things it came to pass that Pharaoh king of Egypt was offended with two of his officers; one was the chief of the butlers, who used to keep the king's wine and pour it out for him, and to give him the cup when he wished to drink—the other used to bake the king's meat and bread, and was called the chief of the bakers; so he put them in prison

under the charge of Potiphar the captain of the guard, even in the prison where Joseph was.

Now Potiphar knew how well Joseph had behaved since he was sent to the prison, and Potiphar told him to take charge of the chief butler and the chief baker, and to serve them. This Joseph did, and it happened that when he went in one morning to the butler and the baker to give them their breakfast, he thought they looked very sad and downcast, and he asked them, "Wherefore look ye so sadly to-day? And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and we have no one to explain it to us. And Joseph said unto them, Does not it belong to God to explain dreams? but I pray you, what they were.

tell me,

"And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me; and in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes: and Pharaoh's cup was in my hand and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand."

When Joseph had heard the dream, he told the chief butler he would tell him what it meant, and he said, "This
