A HYMN . For Nurses to sing when the Child is going

to sleep.

HUSH my dear, lie still, and slumber,

Holy Angels guard thy lē.i,
Heavenly blessings without number,

Gently falling on thy head.
Sleep, my babe ; thy food and raiment,

House and home, thy friends, provide ;
All without thy care or payment,

All thy wants are well supplied. How much better thou'rt attended,

Than the Son of God could be, When froin heaven he descended,

And became a child like thee.
Lo, he slumbers in a manger,

Where the horned oxen fed ;
Peace, my darling, here's no danger,

Here's no ox á near thy bed.
"Twas to save thee child from dying,

Save my dear from burning flame, Bitter groans and endless crying,

That thy dear Redeener caine. May'st thou live to know and fear him,

Trust and love him all thy days; Then go dwell for ever near him,

See his face and sing his praise, I could give thee thousand kisses,

Hoping what I most desire, Not a Mother's fondest wishes,

Can to greater joys aspire.

JACOB'S CHILDREN. GEN. 35. 22. Now the Sons of Jacob were twelve.

FIRST PART. THERE are many parents to whom God has given as many children, as he did to the patriarch Jacob. Children are an heritage of the Lord. Parents who have a numerous family, have also much care and anxiety about them. A person once observed to a Minister of the Gospel, that he had as many Children as Jacob. Yes, said the good man, and I have Jacob's God to provide for them. In the verses following the text, we have a complete list of Jacob's sons. This is the first time that we find their names mentioned altogether; afterwards we find them often mentioned together as the heads of the tribes of Israel. I shall notice a few things concerning the character and history of each of Jacob's sons. The prophecies of Jacob just before his death concerning his sons, as heads of the tribes of Israel, will give us some insight into their

personal character and history. I shall notice them in the order in wbich they are mentioned in the 49tb Chapter, because in this Chapter they are not mentioned according to the order in which they were born.

Jacob had one daughter, and her name was Dinah, she was the daughter of Leah. Her pame Dinah means judgment, or one who judges. When she was about 15 or 16 years of age, she was the cause of great pain and sorrow to her parents. She occasioned the murder of the Shechemites and the plunder of the city. She went out to see, and be seen, and sad indeed were the consequences of her going out to see the daughters of the land. She being the only daughter was no doubt a favo. rite with all the family, the darling of her mo.. ther. Her vanity was her ruin, and this has been the ruin of many others besides Dinah, the daughter of Jacob. There is nothing good recorded of Dinah. She occupies one whole chapter with the mischief cruelty, deceit and murder, of which she was the sole cause. As we cannot say any thing in her commendation, We shall say no more about her now.

His name signifies the vision of a son. He svas Jacob's eldest son by Leah. His Father remembers his son on a dying bed, and said unto him, “ Reuben, thou art my firstborri, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power. Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel." Reuben was an unsteady characteri there was no dependence to be placed in him. His disposition was very changeable. He wanted decision of character, and firmness of mind. He wanted pers verance.

He was inconstant and had not fixed principles, Therefore he did not excel either as a man or as a tribe. When he interceded for Joseph, his brethreu would not hear him, he bad lost all influence with them. His Father also. did not pay any attention to his unwise and imprudent speech, when he said, Slay my two sons if I bring him not unto thee, deliver him into my hand and I will bring him to thee again. There was no Judge, no Prophet, no Prince in Israel belonging to the tribe of Reuben. Dathan and Abiram who re. belled against Moses and offered strange fire

before the Lord, belonged to the tribe of Rello ben. The Priesthood was given to Levi, the dominion to Judah, and the double portion to Joseph.

Il. and HH. SIMEON and Levi

These two sons are joined together by Ja* cob, and we shall not separate them, but speak of them jointly. Simeon's name means one that hears or is heard and one that obeys. Levi signifies one who is joined or united with another. "An associate means one who has united with another in doing evil. Levi lived to the age of 137 years and than died. Simeon and Levi are brethren. What an endearing term when made use of in speaking of two persons united in the ties of affection or bonds of friend. sh p. It is made use of by Jacob to represent two brothers united in revenge, cruelty, bloodshed and murder. Instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. Their swords which ought to have been used only as weapons of defence, became instruments of violence. They seem to have been of obstinate dispositions that would not be advised, but would follow their own evil inclinations. Their tempers were F 3
