PREFACE.

THE FIRST NATIONAL READING-BOOK is the sequel to the NATIONAL PRIMER. The latter consists of exercises on the more common monosyllables. In the FIRST BOOK, more difficult monosyllables and words of two syllables are freely introduced. The object aimed at has not been so much to impart information, as to provide interesting lessons for practice in reading. The more difficult words in each lesson are placed in columns at the top. Special spelling lessons and specimens of Script are given at the end of the book.

Some boys went one day to play by the side of a pond, and they threw stones into it for fun. Now, this pond was full of frogs, and when the boys threw in a stone it hit them. Then one of the frogs put up his head out of the pond, and said: 'Pray, do not pelt us so.'

'We are but at play,' said one of the boys.

'True,' said the frog, 'but the stones you throw hurt us all the same. What is play to you, is death to us.'
