4...If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your fervants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then fhall ye be our fervants and serve us. And the Philiftine faid, I defy the armies of Ifrael this day; give me a man that we may fight together. When Saul and all Ifrael heard thofe words of the Philiftine they were difmayed, and greatly afraid. And the Philiftine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.

:

5...Now David was the fon of Jeffe; and he had eight fons and the three eldeft fons of Jeffe followed Saul to the battle; and David was the youngest and he fed his father's fheep at Bethlehem. And Jeffe faid unto David his fon, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and thefe ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren and carry thele ten cheefes unto the captain of their thoufand, and look how thy brethren fare.

:

6....And David rofe up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jeffe had commanded him and he came to the trench as the hoft was going forth to the fight, and fhouted for the battle. For Ifrael and the Philistines had put the battle in array army against army. And David ran into the army, and came, and faluted his brethren.

7....And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion (the Philifline of Gath, Goliath by name) out of the armies of the Philiftines, and spake according to the fame words and David heard them. And all the men of Ifrael, when they faw the man, fled from him, and were fore afraid.

8....And the men of Ifrael faid, have ve seen this man who is come up? Surely to defy Ifrael is he come up and it fhall be that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich with great riches, and will give him

his daughter, and make his father's houfe free in Ifrael.

9....And David fpake to the men who stood by him, faying, What fhall be done to the man who killeth this Philiftine, and taketh away the reproach from Ifrael? For who is this uncircumcifed Philiftine that he fhould defy the armies of the living God? And the people. answered him after the fame manner, faying, So fhal! it be done unto the man who killeth him.

10....And Eliab, his eldest brother, heard when he fpake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he faid, Why cameft thou down. hither? And with whom haft thou left thofe few sheep in the wildernefs? I know thy pride, and the naughtinefs of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mighte fee the battle. And David faid, What have I done? Is there not a caufe? And when the words were heard which David fpoke, they rehearfed them before. king Saul and he fent for him...

11....And David faid to Saul, Let no man' 's heart fail because of him: thy fervant will go and fight with this Philiftine. And Saul faid unto David, Thou art not able to go against this Philiftine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

12....And David faid unto Saul, thy fervant kept his father's fheep, and there came a lion and a bear, and. took a lamb out of the flock; and I went out after him, and I fmote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he rofe against me, I caught him by his beard, and fmote him, and flew him.

13....Thy fervant flew both the lion and the bear : and this uncircumcifed Phililipe fhall be as one of them, feeing that he hath defied the armies of the living God. David faid, moreover, The Lord, who delivered me out of the paw. of the lion, and out of the paw of the

bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philif tine. And Saul faid unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee. And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.

14....And Davii girded his fword upon his armour, and he affayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David faid unto Saul, I cannot go with thefe ; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. And he took his staff in his hand, and chofe him five fmooth ftones out of the brook, and put them in a fhepherd's bag which he had, even in a fcrip, and his fling was in his hand; and he drew near to the Philiftine. And the Philiftine came on,and drew near unto David and the man who bare the fhield went before him.

d;

15....And when the Philiftine looked about and faw David, he difdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. And the Philistine faid unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? and the Philiftine curfed him by his gods. And the Philiftine faid to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flefh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beafts of the field.

16....Then faid David to the Philiftine, Thou comet to me with a sword, and with a fpear, and with a hield; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hofts, the God of the armies of Ifrael whom thou hast defied. This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand, and I will fmite thee, and take thine head from thee; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Ifrael. And all the affembly fhall know that the Lord faveth not with sword and fpear; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.

17....And it came to pafs, when the Philiftine arole and drew nigh to meet David, that David hafted, and I

ran toward the army to meet the Philiftine. And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and flang it, and fmote the Philiftine in his forehead, that the tone funk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.

18....So David prevailed over the Philiftine with a fling and a ftone, and fmote the Philiftine, and flew hin but there was no fword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran, and flood upon the Philiftine, and took his fword, and drew it out of the fheath thereof, and flew him, and cut of his head therewith.

19....And when the Philiftines faw their champion, was dead, they fled. And the men of Ifrael and of Judah arofe, and fhouted, and purfued the Philiftines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerufalem; but he put his armour in his tent.

And Saul faid to him, Whose fon art thou, young man? And David anfwered, I am the ton of thy fervant Jef fe the Bethlehemite.

2....And it came to pafs, when he had made an end of fpeaking unto Saul, that the foul of Jonathan, Saul's fon, was knit with the foul of David; and Jonathan loved him as his own foul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

3....Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, becaufe he loved him as his own foul. And Jonathan firipped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his fword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

4....And David went out whither foever Saúl fent him, and behaved himself wifely; and Saul fet him over the men of war; and he was accepted in the fight of the people, and alfo in the fight of Saul's fervants. And it came to páfs, as they came, when David was returned from the flaughter of the Pailiftine, that the women came out of all the cities of Ifrael, finging and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with inftruments of mufic.

5...And the women anfwered one another as they played, and faid, Saul hath flain his thoufands, and David his ten thousands: And Saul was very wroth, and the faying difplealed him; and he faid, They have a. fcribed unto David his ten thoufands, and to me they have afcribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
