GREETING.

N the ever-to-be-remembered record of the experience

IN

of Christian and Hopeful in the dominion of Giant Despair, we read of their return to the King's Highway, to the stile over which they had ventured into the enticing by-path. "Now, when they were gone over the stile, they began to contrive with themselves what they should do at that stile to prevent those that should come after from falling into the hands of Giant Despair. So they consented to erect there a pillar, and to engrave upon the side thereof this sentence: 'Over this stile is the way to Doubting Castle, which is kept by Giant Despair, who despiseth the King of the Celestial Country and seeks to destroy his holy pilgrims.' Many therefore, that followed after, read what was written, and escaped the danger." Thus the friendly waymark bestowed upon all who were able to "read what was written" the best fruit of the pilgrims' experience.

We like to think of the King's Highway as safely hedged by such guides, and marked as well by signs of paths surely leading to the Beautiful Gate. But is it not true that our way is so marked? The experience
