Esempio: I work She works It works Io lavoro Noi lavoriamo Essi lavorano 2. He pays You obey She obeys Io pago Voi ubbidite Ella ubbidisce 5. Esempio: 1 fried We tried They played She prayed Passato definito ed imperfetto Io frissi o friggeva Noi provammo o provavamo I have fried We have tried They have played She has prayed Participio passato Io ho fritto Ella ha pregato 7. 2. La sorella decise di andare a New York. 3. Egli accomoda la macchina ogni mattina. 4. Egli va a lavorare quattro giorni alla settimana. 5. Noi abbiamo deciso di venire a vedervi. 6. 8. Noi credemmo a tutti i discorsi dello zio. 9. Essi baciarono i bambini e le bambine. 10. FIFTH LESSON THE VOYAGE After a few months everything was ready for Columbus to leave. He now was in command of a fleet of three small ships and of a company of seamen that the queen of Spain had put at his disposal. The sailors, however, were afraid to cross the unknown sea; their minds were full of foolish stories, common at that time, of "the sea of darkness," and Columbus had a hard time to persuade them to go with him. Finally he succeeded, and soon after they started. After three weeks Columbus reached the Canary Islands, where he took on board fresh supplies of food and water. Here the men renewed their opposition to going farther, but Columbus would not listen to their entreaties, so they sailed into the sea in which no ship had ever been. Several weeks passed by and no sign of land had yet been seen, so the sailors begged Columbus to return home, and, when they saw that he would not listen to them, they planned to throw him into the sea. But on the following day they found a branch of a tree with some fresh fruit on it, and came to the conclusion that they were near land. During the night no one of the crew slept, and at two o'clock one of the sailors sighted an island and cried out "land!" No one can imagine the joy they felt that night. All fell at Columbus' feet and begged his forgiveness. |
