2. Il verbo to make si usa anche in certe allocuzioni che non esprimono affato l'idea di lavoro manuale.

Esempio:

1 make myself known.

He made up his mind to return.
We make a great mistake.

Mi faccio conoscere da me.

3. Il verbo to do si usa anche nelle interrogazioni. Nelle risposte non è necessario di replicare il verbo di cui parliamo, ma è sufficiente di usare do nell'affermazione e do not nella negazione.

4. Nelle interrogazioni negative, not si mette dopo il pronome; nelle risposte, dopo l'ausiliario do.

Esempio:

Do you see him?

No, I do not.

Do I not love you?

No, you do not.

Non lo vedete?

No, non lo vedo.

Non vi amo io?

No, non mi amate.

Altri esempii:

Did you go to New York yes

Andaste a New York ieri?

terday?

Sì, vi andai.

[ocr errors]

Yes, I did.

Did I not write my lesson well? Non ho scritta bene la mia le

No, you did not.

zione?

No, non l'avete scritta bene.

6. Per la forma interrogativa si usano tutte le altre particelle dell'ausiliario: will, shall, would, should, ecc.

Esempio:

Will you come to-morrow?

Yes, 1 will.

Shall we do this?

No, you shall not.

Would you like to drink?

Yes, I would.

Verrete domani?

Sì, verrò.

Faremo questo?

No, non lo dovete fare.
Vi piacerebbe a bere?
Sì, mi piacerebbe.

Esempio:

Wait here until I come.

Aspettate fino a che vengo.

I will do this kind of work | Farò questa specie di lavoro fino

until I get tired.

I will have to go as far as the Post Office to mail this letter.

This piece of property extends as far as the river.

TWELFTH LESSON

ENGLAND AND HER COLONIES

Now that the colonists had got rid of all the troubles which hitherto had been caused by the French, new difficulties began to arise, not through any foreign power, but on the part of their own motherland.

As time went on, the colonies prospered in every direction and were becoming very strong in their business and agricultural enterprises. At this time the English Parliament decided to collect taxes from the colonists, and began to lay burdens upon them, which were too heavy to bear.

The Americans were not willing to submit to all the decisions of the English government, and declared that, so long as they elected no members for the Parliament, they would pay no tax at all. But those who ruled in England thought that the colonies had not the same rights as the people in England, so they did all they could to oppress the Americans in many ways.

In 1765 the British government passed a law called "The Stamp Act," which compelled the Americans to buy tax stamps to be used on all their legal deeds. This was too much for the Americans,

so they protested against it, burned the houses of the officials and forced the agents to resign.

When England was informed of this rebellion, she immediately sent soldiers to America to compel the people to obedience, and in addition passed another law called "The Mutiny Act," which required the colonists to pay for the support of the soldiers.

Now the situation became worse than ever because the Americans were willing neither to pay the tax nor to obey the soldiers, and the result was that several struggles took place between the soldiers and colonists, and quite a few people on both sides were killed.

Esempio:

Can you tell me the name of Potete dirmi il nome di questa
