that grow to be big flies? No. Little flies do not grow to be big flies.

4. Every fly was once a little thing called a grub. Then it had no wings. It could not run or fly. It could only crawl and eat; and as it kept on eating, it grew bigger.

5. Then it stopped eating and growing bigger. It did not wriggle or crawl about any more, but kept very still. By and by two wings and six legs came out on its body. It was no longer a grub; and all at once it flew out as nice and nimble a fly as was ever seen on a dinner-table. After that it grew no more.

A FLY'S FOOT AS FASTENED TO THE CEILING BY

MANY HAIR-LIKE BODIES ON THE PADS.

[blocks in formation]

Let us watch him, you and I.

How he crawls

Up the walls,

Yet he never falls!

I believe with six such legs

You and I could walk on eggs.
There he goes

On his toes,

Tickling Baby's nose.

2. Spots of red

Dot his head;

Rainbows on his back are spread;

That small speck

Is his neck;

See him nod and beck!

I can show

you, if you choose,

Where to look to find his shoes,
Three small pairs,

Made of hairs ;

These he always wears.

3. Flies can see.

More than we;

So how bright their eyes must be!
Little fly,

Ope your eye;

Spiders are near by.

For a secret I can tell,

Spiders never use flies well;

Then away,

Do not stay.

Little fly, good day.

1. A HUNTER, in a distant land, where lions are found, was on his way home. He had to cross a field, where he saw a lion close by, watching him. The hunter had used all his bullets, and he could not run away from the lion, so he looked round about for a safe place to hide in for the night, but could see none.

2. At last he thought of a plan to cheat the lion. He crept under the ledge of a high cliff, and hid where the lion could not see him. It was now dark, but the man could see that the lion had come after him, and was but a little way off.

3. He took off his hat and coat, and put them on his gun, so as to make them look Then he waved them above

like a man.

the edge of the rock.

4. As soon as the lion came up, he saw the coat and the hat, and at once made a spring at them. He bounded right over the cliff where the man lay, and was dashed to pieces on the rocks below.

1. WHAT is that spot of green light in the bushes? See, there is another, and another! Ah! they move!

How fast they

It is like wild-fire,

flit about! Is it fire?
like little stars upon the ground.
