And Sleepy-head,
Purring so cozily,

2. Woe to the stupid mouse Prowling about!

Little cats, big cats,

3. Mother's a gypsy puss,—
Often she moves,
Thinking much travel
Her children improves.
High-minded family,
Very well bred;

No falling out, you see!

1. SOME children had a pet lamb called Daisy. Their mother could get no work to do, and had to sell some of her things to buy bread. At last she had nothing left to sell but the pet lamb.

2. So she went to the butcher and asked him to buy the lamb. The butcher said, "Here is $5, and I will come for the lamb to-morrow."

3. When he came the next day, the children were playing with Daisy. "I have come for the lamb," said the man. When they heard this, the children cried out, "O mother, you will not sell our lamb?"

4. Said the mother, "I have no food; I must sell it." The children all came about her, and begged her not to sell it.

5. Then the mother, with tears, gave back the money to the butcher, saying, "I will

keep the lamb a little longer." But the butcher was a kind man, and said, both the lamb and the money."

2. The Lapp does not live near us; his home is in a very cold land, a long way off. In that land, for a part of the year, the sun does not rise, and all that time it is dark and very cold, with deep snow and ice. Then, when at last the sun does rise, he will not set for the rest of the year, and all that time it is day.

3. When the dark time of the year is come, it is very nice for the Lapp to ride over the snow by the light of the moon;
