THE KITTREDGE AND FARLEY

GRAMMARS

"THE MOST IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION OF RECENT YEARS TO THE HIGH-SCHOOL TEACHING OF ENGLISH GRAMMAR

[ocr errors]

A CONCISE ENGLISH GRAMMAR
WITH EXERCISES

By GEORGE Lyman KittreDGE, Gurney Professor of English Literature in
Harvard University, and FRANK EDGAR FARLEY, Professor of
English Literature in Wesleyan University

ix +235 pages

THIS book has been prepared to fill the definite need for a brief manual for use in courses of study requiring a rapid but none the less thorough survey of the principles of English Grammar. The general plan of the authors' early success—"An Advanced English Grammar”

- has been followed: Part One surveys the Parts of Speech; Part Two deals specifically with Inflection and Syntax; and Part Three with Analysis. The definitions, however, are condensed and minor points omitted. The terminology agrees with the recommendations of the Joint Committee on Grammatical Nomenclature.

AN ADVANCED ENGLISH GRAMMAR

By KITTREDGE and FARLEY

12mo, cloth, 333 pages, with full index and appendixes

A GRAMMAR distinctly for high-school use written by recognized authorities, compact, comprehensive, clear, and logical. Much attention is given difficult problems of syntax and analysis, and such topics as the use of shall and will, the infinitive, participles, the verbal noun, indirect questions, and conditional sentences are thoroughly discussed. Further, the book is unique in its adaptability as a reference book in connection with work in English literature and in composition and rhetoric.
