country, towards the end of his destination, and is not discouraged, until he has found at least a means of satisfying his immediate and short urgent

wants.

16 As he does not know the addresses of employers, nor his route, nor the fares of travel either by water or by land, &c. he feels the want of instruction and advice. There will be, especially if he is in possession of money, no lack of those, who offer him their services, of course, under the affirmation of their disinterestedness and that they will take the best care of all his affairs. He ought to be very cautious with those friends of the moment, however decently they may appear, and whatever alluring promises they may make him. He should trust them with no money to change for him, neither should he favor them with any money to keep or send away to others; for if such a one is dishonest and declares that he has lost it, he cannot be punished for it by law, provided that this trust was not a matter of business, for which he has received a reward or the promise of one. Indeed, the unsuspecting immigrant, on his landing, is often in danger of falling into the hands of some swindler and of becoming the dupe of his own confidence and ignorance. Even before touching the soil of this blessed country, in the sight of the shore, he is apt to be approached by those men, who skilfully seize, in behalf of their own selfish purposes, upon his feelings of astonishment and

17 In dieser und mancher anderen Beziehung sollte der Auswanderer, welcher Willens ist, seine Reise nach Amerika anzutreten, oder auf dem Wege dahin, den Rath für Auswanderer nicht unbeachtet lassen, welcher vor einiger Zeit in öffentlichen Blättern erschien und wovon Nachfolgendes entnommen ist :

1. Nie und nimmer laßt euch in Deutschland dazu verleiten, zum Voraus für eure Reise von Neu-York in's Innere von Amerika zu bezahlen. Gewinnen könnt ihr dabei nichts, verlieren sehr viel. Bezahlt bloß die Seereise bis Neu-York, und nicht weiter!

2. Seid ihr Willens, nach Missouri, Jowa, dem westlichen oder südlichen Illinois oder dem südlichen Indiana zu reisen: so reiset über Neu-Orleans! Obwohl auch dort Betrug genug verübt wird, so ist's doch dort nicht so arg, und die Folgen nicht so empfindlich, wie in Neu-York.

3. Ihr braucht euch mit keinem Mäkler (runner) und keinem Passage-Bureau (forwarding office) einzulassen. Die Mäkler machen sich nichts daraus, die unverschämtesten Lügen zu sagen. Fragt ihr nach einem Freunde in Neu-York,

17 In this and many other relations the emigrant intending to start for, or on his way to America should not neglect to consider the advice for emigrants, which appeared in some public papers a short time since and from which the following is selected.5

1. Never suffer yourself to be so misguided in Germany, as to pay in advance your fare from New-York to the interior of America. You can gain nothing by this, but lose much. Pay your passage only to New-York, and no farther.

2. If you wish to go to Missouri, Iowa, to Western or Southern Illinois, or to Southern Indiana, go by the way of New Orleans. Although there is deception' enough committed there, yet it is not so bad and the consequences not so pernicious," as in New-York.

3. You need not engage" a runner12 or inquire13 at a forwarding-office. The runners feel no compunction in telling you the most impudent falsehoods If you, for instance, inquire for a friend in New-York,

so versichern sie euch, er sei weggezogen. Fragt ihr nach einem Wirthe, den man euch empfohlen hat, so versichern sie euch, der sei bankerott gegangen. Laßt euch durch dies Alles nicht irre machen! Wie frech sie auch behaupten mögen, sie seien von der Obrigkeit dazu bestellt, euch zu rathen und zu leiten: glaubt's nicht und befolgt's nicht! Verhaltet euch gegen sie, als ob ihr weder hören noch sprechen könn tet! Müßt ihr ja etwas sprechen, so sagt ruhig: Ich werde schon wissen, was ich zu thun habe," oder eine ähnliche ausweichende Antwort.

4. Ihr habt das Recht, zweimal 24 Stunden nach eurer Ankunft mit eurem Gepäck auf dem Schiffe zu bleiben. Benuset dies Recht! Eilet nicht!. Nehmt euch Zeit! Geht ruhig von eurem Schiffe aus am Hafen entlang, so werdet ihr da schon die Dampfboote liegen sehn, die nach Philadelphia, Albany und andern Orten hinfahren. Mit großen Buchstaben sind jene Namen („Philadelphia,“ ,,Albany") dort angeschrieben. Wenn ihr nur Aus gen habt und lesen könnt, so findet ihr's schon, ohne einen aufdringlichen Führer nöthig zu haben. Bes zahlt dann auf dem Dampfboote in der Office des Schiffscapitains und nicht eher, als bis das Schiff abfährt, eure Reise bis Philadelphia, Albany 2c., und wenn ihr dort angekommen seid, so bezahlt die weitere Reise mit gleicher Vorsicht!

5. Kanal-Reisen scheinen zwar viel wohlfeiler zu

However impudently they may assert, that they are commissioned by the government to advise and to guide you do not believe them nor follow their advice. Conduct yourself with them, as though3 you could neither hear nor speak. But if you must say any thing, quietly say: "I know already what I have to do," or give a similar evasive answer.

4. You have the right to remain with your baggages on board the ship forty-eight hours after your arrival. Make use of this privilege. Do not be in a hurry. Take time. Go quietly from your ship along the wharf, and you will see lying there the steamboats which are bound for Philadelphia, Al bany and other places. These names (Philadelphia, Albany, &c.) are written there in great letters. If you only have eyes and can read, you will soon find it out without the aid of an obtruding conductor. Pay then upon the boat, at the captain's office, and not till the boat starts, your fare for Philadelphia, Albany, &c. and when you arrive at these places, pay for your farther passage with like precaution.

5. Travelling by canal seems to be much cheaper, 1 wegziehen. -2 irre leiten, irre machen. — 3 als ob, als 4 ausweichend. 5 das Gepäck. 6 die Eile.
