The Following Are Full and Accurate Reviews of

All the Important Books Lately Published

THE WAY OF A MAN. By Emerson Hough. Price $1.50. "The Way of a Man" is certainly a masterpiece of fiction. It is a story full of power, pathos, passionate life and human feeling, interesting alike to those who read a story for the story's sake, and to those who appreciate good literature.

The scene of the story is laid in the West, mostly during the time of the great westward movement previous to the Civil War.

Briefly, the plot is as follows: The hero, John Cowles, becomes engaged to a girl whom he does not really love. Leaving his Virginia home, he goes West, and at St. Louis meets the one girl. Shortly afterward they cross the great plains together, with a large traveling party, and meet with many adventures. Straying from the trail one day, they are lost in the great desert. They have to live by their wits, matching as primitive man matched, their cunning against that of animals, upon which they prey. He falls sick, and on her develops the daily hunt for food, the struggle for existence. In the meantime they have grown to love each other, and when he recovers, he tells her of his passion, urging her to become his wife with the simple ceremony of Scottish law. She agrees that if they are not rescued by a certain time his plan shall be followed. On the eve of the time set, they are found by a searching party, and go back to the settlements. They are to be married, but owing to the machinations of the villain of the story, an emissary from the cotton interests in England, sent over to help fan into flame the impending war, and himself in love with the heroine, misunderstandings occur, and they are separated. He becomes entangled with the other girl again and agrees to marry her. At this time war breaks out, and he enlists under the Northern flag. He meets in battle face to face the other man fighting with the Confederates. The villain is killed, and when the hero returns from the war he finds the other girl is dead. And then-well, get the book and read a most thrilling story of love and adventure. Published by The Outing Publishing Co., Deposit, N. Y.

LANGFORD OF THE THREE BARS.
Virgil D. Boyles. Price $1.50.

JUST AWAY. A Story of Hope. By Della Thompson
Lutes.

A sweet, wholesome volume dedicated to mothers who have felt the pain and sting of death among their fold. It is full of tender, loving simple heart to heart talks, and strives to comfort and uplift grief-stricken hearts by bringing them in closer touch with God's will and strengthening their faith, drawing back the fold in order to allow a glimpse of the celestial peace and sunshine to penetrate the bleak darkness.

For a frontispiece James Whitcomb Riley's beautiful poem "Away" is most effectively selected as a summary. Published by Crist-Scott & Parshall, Cooperstown, N. Y.

PETER'S MOTHER. By Mrs. Henry de La Pasture.

In this book is portrayed the life of Lady Mary, the beautiful young wife of Sir Timothy, who is cold, stern and selfish. Lady Mary is the mother of Peter, a very willful, selfish boy much like his father in disposition. She married when but seventeen and her life was choked and hampered to submission by her husband and his two old sisters. Her love for Peter. however, gave her comfort and loving inspirations.

After the death of Sir Timothy, John Crewy, a distinguished K. C., awakens Lady Mary to her former care free loving nature. Altogether a story of good structure. Published by E. P. Dutton & Co., New York. AMERICAN CHARACTER. By Brander Mathews.

Professor Mathews in his book, "American Character," lays forth an interesting analysis of our national traits. Interest and enthusiasm are added to the analysis as his opinions result in strong arguments against the criticism openly maintained by foreign critics, namely, that the ambition of the American's heart, the passion of his life, is money; that Americans ignore the arts and despise disinterested beauty. Professor Mathews has indeed proved himself equal to this task in the writing of this book. Published by Thos. C. Crowell & Co., New York. THE CASE OF DOCTOR HORACE. By Kate and tis. This book is a great study of the importance of conscience in the detection of crime.

The Boyles give in this story a true picture of Western life where cattle rustlers create an atmosphere of unrest. The book is a thrilling bit of romance and opens with the introduction, "The Island With a Mystery," where cattle rustlers were wont to carry on their nefarious trade. And then Paul Langford, hero, lover, ranchman and owner of the "Three Bars," started in to put an end to cattle rustling in his part of South Dakota. He and the County Attorney had to make the fight alone-the thieves owned nearly everyone else. But there was strength and determination back of it, and there was an abiding faith in the power of the "Three Bars" ranch to make things happen. Two high-spirited girls play a brave part in this exciting tale of a fighter of the right sort, and make it a delightful love story as well.

WITH THE TOURIST TIDE. By Arthur B. Cook.

The author of "With the Tourist Tide." A. B. Cook, well deserves high compliments for his unique and interesting volume so cleverly written on a voyage across the sea. His pictures of scenes and persons are most beautifully described with such ease of expression that the reader soon becomes one of the company drifting along to an unknown land where various scenes are opened, living through this dreamland of travels until the end awakens him again to the stern reality that 'twas but a book dream; a reader's privilege to accept and an author's honor to bestow.

Two friends. a Dr. Horace and a Mr. Ed. Wallace, chums of a lifetime, have taken upon themselves the task of proving a theory. Mr. Wallace maintains that we punish crime because we have a moral right to punish it. He further maintains that when a law has no moral superiority to the criminal, it cannot overcome and punish him. Dr. Horace on the other hand firmly insists that we punish those who beat our laws because we are greater than they; that when the law loses its might to furnish criminals they go free.

These arguments are the result of a daring wager between Dr. Horace and Mr. Wallace and the book teems with interest from the very outset of the wager. Published by The Baker & Taylor Co., New York.
