While it is not an exhaustive treatment of its subject, it represents an honest endeavor to give to those who need it a means of dealing with many minor types of defective speech. For years, teachers have felt the need of such a textbook. Surprisingly little has been done in the correction of speech defects in the past chiefly, perhaps, because there is very little definite literature on the subject. Various books have been written in relation to stammering and other speech defects, but they are, as a rule, too highly technical in language to be easily used. The great need of the teacher to-day is a compact handbook that gives definite methods and devices for the correction of the various common defects found in the speech of school children. It is hoped that this volume will meet that need. The personal equation is such a strong factor in the successful treatment of speech defects that the author has sometimes hesitated in setting down definite rules for fear of being dogmatic. She |
