On motion of Mr. Bradley,

A committee of two, consisting of Senators Bradley and Cust, were appointed to inform the Governor of the election of Hon. William L. Greenly President pro tem. of the Senate.

After a short absence; the committee reported that they had discharged the duty assigned them.

Mr. Cust from the committee on enrolled bills reported as correctly enrolled, a "joint resolution rescinding in part a joint resolution prohibiting new contracts on the public works.”

Mr. Starkey offered the following preamble and resolution : Whereas, Dominick A. Hall, Judge of the United States court for the district of Louisiana, did impose a fine of one thousand dollars on General Andrew Jackson, for an alleged contempt of his authority, which fine was by him paid into the hands of the Marshal of said District, and the citizens in New-Orleans, in token of the high esteem they held his services, did offer to refund the fine imposed, but with a magnanimty, that always marked his conduct, refused, but requested them to give the same to the widows of the soldiers, who died in defending their country.

Resolved, therefore, (the House of Representatives concurring,) "That our Senators Le instructed and our Representative requested to use their best efforts to procure the passage of a law directing that the fine imposed on General Jackson be refunded to him with costs, and intercat on the same from the day of the payment thereof. On motion of Mr. Starkey,

The rule was suspended, and the resolution coming before the Senate for consideration,

Mr. Storkey moved to amend by striking out all the preamble, af ter "district" and,

state affairs.

Mr. Wixom presented the claim of W. P. Patrick, which was referred to the committee on claims.

Mr. Wilson gave notice that he should on some future day ask leave to introduce a bill to amend "An wet to amend the revised statutes relative to primary schools," approved April 1, 1840.

The President pro tem. read a communication from Secretary of State, responding to a resolution of the Senate requiring an account of the public lands belonging to the State, accompanied by a list of the Salt Springs, State buildings, University and school lands, &c., which were referred to select committee on University and school Jands.

The President pro tem. anounced as ordered to a third reading, a "bill to amend an act entitled an act to exempt certain property from execution or sale for any debt, damages, fine or amercement, approved Feb. 16, 1842."

Mr. Cust moved to recommit the bill to the committee on the judiciary, with instructions to strike out sec. 10, and the yeas and nays being called, the motion was lost by the following vote :

Mr. Starkey moved to recommit the bill to committee on judiciary, with instructions to strike out all after sec. 1, and the yeas and nays being called, the motion to recommit was lost by the following vote; Yeas-Messrs. Cust, Gray, Shearer, Starkey, Warner, Wixom

Mr. Shearer moved to lay the bill on the table, which motion was lost.

'Mr. Cust moved to reconimit the bill to committee on the judiciary with instructions to insert a proviso that the new exemptions contained in this bill shall not affect contracts already entered into.

Mr. Wilson moved to amend the motion to recommit, by inserting like proviso to all other exemptions, which motion was lost.

The question recurring on the motion to recommit, and the yeas and nays being called, it was lost by the following vote:

On motion of Mr Cust,

The bill was laid on the tablo.

Mr. Howell, from the committee on conference, to whom was referred a bill to amend an act entitled "an act to amend the several acts concerning the Supreme Court, Circuit Courts and Court of Chancery of the State of Michigan, approved Feb. 11,1837,” reported the same back with a substitute entitled a "Lill to provide for the transfer of certain causes from the Supreme Court to the Court of Chancery and for other purposes," which was referred to the committee of the whole.

The President pro tem. announced as on the general order, a "bill to repeal an act entitled an act to incorporate the Baptist Convention of the State of Michigan, approved Feb. 16, 1942,"

On motion of Mr. Boll,

The bill was laid upon the table,

Mr. Bradley moved to take from the table a "bill explanatory of the act entitled an act to reduce the price of University and School lands and for other purposes, approved Feb 15, 1842," which motion was lost.

The President pro tem. announced the following message from the executive, by Mr. J. M. Welch, his private secretary:

I have this day approved, signed and filed in the office of the Secretary of State,

"An act amendatory of an act, entitied an act granting to certain debtors to the State, the privilege of paying the State in state bonds, &c."

The Senate was called to order by Mr. Greenly President pro tem, Prayer by the Rt. Rev. Bishop McCoskry.

The Journal of yesterday was read and approved.

Mr. Burch presented the memorial of La Plaisance Bay Harbor Co., which was referred to committee on Internal Improvement.

Mr. Burch presented the petition of sundry inhabitants of Monroe in favor of improving the railroad laying between the Southern railroad and La Plaisance Bay, which was referred to committee on Internal Improvement.

Mr. Burch presented the memorial of Ellis & Briggs relative to the public printing, which was referred to committee on printing.

Mr. Green, from the committee on the judiciary, to whom was referred the bill to amend an act entitled "an act relating to the conveyance of real estate," reported the same back without amendment, and recommended its passage.

And the bill to amend an act entitled "an act relating to the con veyance of real estate," was referred to the committee of the whole.

Mr. Green, from the committee on the judiciary, to whom was referred a petition of sundry inhabitants of the county of Washtenaw, praying for the passage of a law giving mechanics a lien on all articles made or repaired by them, until all charges are paid, and authorising them, in default of payment, to sell such articles by giving notice, &c., respectfully submitted the following
