A bill to adopt and prescribe the design of a State coat-of-arms and State flag, and their use, and to prohibit the use of the same for advertising purposes, and to provide a punishment for such forbidden use. The motion prevailed.

The bill having been read a third time and the question being on the passage thereof,

Mr. Walter moved to amend the bill as follows:

By inserting in line 6 of section 1 after the figures "1838" the words "and to the Constitution of 1850 received and filed in the office of the Secretary of State, August 15, 1850, and now on file in said office." The question being on receiving the amendment,

Mr. Wiggins offered the following resolution:

Senate resolution No. 77.

Whereas, It is but fitting that the Senate should show some special mark of respect for the deceased and lamented Judge Heckert, so lately a member of the House of Representatives; therefore

Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate be instructed to direct that an offering of flowers, such as would be befitting, be placed at the bier of the deceased.

The question being on the adoption of the resolution,

The roll of the Senate was called by the Secretary.

Mr. Cartier moved that the absentees without leave be excused from today's session.

PRESENTATION OF PETITIONS.

Petition No. 620. By Mr. Kingman: Protest of John Zedler and 105 other citizens of Calhoun county, against the passage of the Fitzgibbon bill relative to the submission of the local option question to the township, village and city as a unit instead of to the county as under the present law.

The protest was referred to the Committee on Liquor Traffic.
