It seems to us that a tariff of, say, about 5 cents per pound would be much more equitable, especially as this article does not compete with any of our American products.

Of course, we know this is a very small item, but, nevertheless, we would certainly appreciate if the committee saw fit to make a reduction.

Vinegar, seven and one-half cents per proof gallon. The standard proof for vinegar shall be taken to be that strength which requires thirty-five grains of bicarbonate of potash to neutralize one ounce troy of vinegar.

Mr. HAMILTON. I appear here to ask that Schedule H be modified and that my remarks are contained in this brief far better than I can express them to the committee. Unless we can show the committee that we can gain more revenue by a reduced rate, I do not think there is anything more that we can say or try to say.
