Monday, January 1, 1838.

This being the day designated in the constitution of the state for the regular annual meeting of the legislature, the Senate convened in their chamber in the capitol at the city of Detroit.

Messrs. Kercheval and Woodbridge, as members elect from the first senatorial district; Mr. Wing, from the second district; Mr. Bradford, from the third district; and Mr. Kingsley, from the fourth district, presented their respective certificates of election, and severally took and subscribed before the Hon. Ross Wilkins, the constitutional oath of office, and took their seats as members of the Senate.

Mr. Trowbridge, as member elect from the fifth senatorial district, having presented a certificate of a canvass for that district, held by the proper canvassing officers for the several counties comprising said district, except the counties of Saginaw, Michilimackinac and Chippewa, and Mr. Bartow having presented a statement contesting the seat of Mr. Trowbridge, the certificate and statement, on motion of Mr. Clark, were referred to a select committee of five.

Whereupon, Messrs. Clark, Woodbridge, Wing, Barry and Kingsley were appointed said committee.
