61ST CONGRESS, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. ( DOCUMENT 2d Session.

REPAIRS, TREASURY BUILDING, WASHINGTON, D. C., ETC.

LETTER

FROM

THE ACTING SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY,

SUBMITTING

ESTIMATE OF APPROPRIATION FOR REPAIRS OF THE TREASURY BUILDING IN WASHINGTON, D. C., AND OF THE SUBTREASURY, NEW YORK CITY, N. Y.

MARCH 22, 1910.-Referred to the Committee on Appropriations and ordered to be

printed.

TREASURY DEPARTMENT,

OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY,
Washington, March 21, 1910.

SIR: I have the honor to call your attention to the present condition and physical arrangements of the Treasury building and of the subtreasury, New York City. By a reassignment and rearrangement of the space in the existing buildings a businesslike placing of the various bureaus could be obtained which would be productive of large economy in administration, expedite the work to a great degree, and, most important of all, safeguard the handling of moneys.

In order to accomplish this complete rearrangement, an appropriation of $180,000 for the Treasury building and of $170,000 for the subtreasury, New York, will be necessary.

I have therefore earnestly to recommend that the following item be included in one of the pending appropriation bills:

Special repairs to the Treasury building in Washington, D. C., and subtreasury building, New York, N. Y.: To rearrange, improve, and modernize the interior of the Treasury building in Washington, D. C., and the subtreasury building in New York, N. Y., including approaches thereto, the mechanical and vault equipments of the same to fit the said buildings for the economical transaction of business, exclusive of personal services, except for work done by contract, $350,000, of which sum not exceeding $180,000 shall be applicable to the Treasury building and $170,000 to the subtreasury in New York.

Respectfully,

CHARLES D. NORTON,
Acting Secretary.

The SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
